I always wondered how the so-called "N-word" came about.

Maybe if we look at the etymology of the word, we may come to an explanation. The South was dominantly Protestant therefore people had Bibles (presumably they also read it) in their homes as opposed to the believers of the Church of Rome (Catholic Church) who relied solely on the clergy in dispensing the Word of God.
