I found it interesting that after such a fuss was made about hearing it spoken that it was banned from being used, yet, one frequently heard blacks using it. Whan confronted about it, the usual reply was, "you (whites)" can't use it. It's our word.
Thus, leaving a person walking away in confusion, since according to blacks, it's SO offensive. It can also be pointed to as the beginning point on the drive to end free speech. Once that one word was banned, it became a slippery slope in an effort to end any words that "might" offend anyone, except whites.
