Oh, it's definitely why the South Started it.

But ending it only became a goal of the North after a couple years of fighting and **** those guys.

First, the guys who did that died a long time ago, why should anyone be grateful to you (especially if one's forbears were from, oh. let's say, Poland at the time.)
