Do you remember the TV series Wiseguy from the 1990s? I think it was in the second season, when the show revolved around two partners in crime, brother and sister Mel and Susan Profitt. Mel Profitt died, and Susan Profitt’s story became one of the most emotionally complex arcs I can remember. They loved each other to a level that wasn’t normal for siblings. They were codependent, almost like Siamese twins in spirit. In the end, Mel spiraled into drug addiction and died. When he did, Susan went to pieces, and their criminal empire collapsed. It was as if she couldn’t live without her brother. Can you remember another story with such a compelling twist from the past?

"Mel & Susan Profitt Arc (Wiseguy, Season 2)
Introduction of Characters

Mel Profitt: A wealthy, unstable drug dealer with grand ambitions.

Susan Profitt: His sister, equally manipulative, deeply bonded with Mel in a disturbing, codependent way.

Partnership in Crime

Together, they build a criminal empire fueled by drugs and corruption.

Their relationship is portrayed as unusually intense, blurring the lines between sibling loyalty and unhealthy dependence.

Mel’s Downfall

Mel spirals into paranoia and heavy drug addiction.

His erratic behavior destabilizes their empire.

Eventually, Mel dies, leaving Susan devastated.

Susan’s Collapse

Unable to cope without her brother, Susan unravels emotionally.

The criminal empire crumbles as her grip on power disintegrates.

Her story becomes a tragic portrait of codependency and loss.

Legacy of the Arc

Widely remembered as one of the most emotionally complex and compelling storylines of the series.

Showed how love, obsession, and crime intertwined to create a downfall that felt inevitable."

What did you think of the Mel and Susan Profitt story? To me, it was memorable enough that I still remember it all these years later—it must have been 30 years. Mel Profitt was Kevin Spacey’s first major breakout role on television, and it launched his acting career.

I think Season Three is when Vinnie Terranova came into contact with the “company man” Roger LoCocco working undercover. Even though intelligence operatives (“spooks”) aren’t supposed to operate inside the United States, television didn’t always worry about such formalities. I thought that character was fairly memorable too.
