How much of the historical events we celebrate today stem from colonial fears that England was about to outlaw slavery?

" We should understand that July 4th, 1776, in many ways, represents a counterrevolution.

"That is to say that what helped to prompt July 4th, 1776, was the perception amongst European settlers on the North American mainland that London was moving rapidly towards abolition.

"This perception was prompted by Somerset’s case, a case decided in London in June 1772 which seemed to suggest that abolition, which not only was going to be ratified in London itself, was going to cross the Atlantic and basically sweep through the mainland, thereby jeopardizing numerous fortunes, not only based upon slavery, but the slave trade."

Finally someone from the left makes a definitive case for what they believe I can appreciate that. And at least in part agree that the ops scenario may be true. The world in the 1700 was much different, as a Free Nation endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights , Those being life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The founding fathers regardless of their racist(normal for the time) actions, gave future generations a document that is as alive today as it was in 1776 struggling and fighting and clawing for the rights of all "Americans". to attain those three most important things. Some will not succeed some will flourish but all should be allowed to pursue their happiness whatever it might be without having to worry about getting hit with Milkshakes simply for having a different point of view. Many people Black and white Abhorred Slavery so much that they were willing to give their lives to end it. We live in the Greatest Experiment in Human History. And think about this on this "Independence Day" we have men and women in harms way (as you light the grill and swim in the pool and pop the cap on just one more beer) and they should be HONORED

England didn't outlaw slavery in their colonies until 1833 ... 57 years AFTER the US became independent.

That doesn't have any bearing on the perceptions of the colonists in 1772.

Gerald Horne - Wikipedia

"Gerald Horne was born on January 3, 1949, and was raised in St. Louis, Missouri. After undergraduate education at Princeton University he received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley...."

"A prolific author, Horne has published on W. E. B. Du Bois and has written books on a wide range of neglected but by no means marginal or minor episodes of world history. He writes about topics he perceives as misrepresented struggles for justice, in particular communist struggles and struggles against imperialism, colonialism, fascism, racism and white supremacy."
