I was going to write something profound and deep tonight about the takedown of Legal Insurrection’s YouTube account after the Modern Language Association filed three (3) copyright claims with YouTube relating to my coverage of the arguments made at an MLA annual meeting town hall in favor and against the academic boycott of Israel.

*Perhaps* it was total *coincidence* that three (3) claims were filed considering that YouTube has a well-known three strikes rule — three claims and they may remove your channel and account. Which is what happened even before I knew there was a copyright claim by MLA (it never contacted us).

They were temporarily shut down because of copyright infringement claims, not some nefarious government conspiracy to stamp out freedom of the press. Youtube has shut down hundreds of channels on their site for alleged copyright violations over the years, channels that cover the spectrum of subjects. Your complaint is with a website's DMCA policies, you still see your hero's website up don't you?

What exactly would we be boycotting, the rights of youtube to control content on their own privately owned video hosting site with policies regarding republishing copyrighted material?

Freedom of speech and freedom of press continue to be some of the most misunderstood constitutional rights in the USA.
