You owe us millions

Only millions? Not billions? Sheesh, how pathetic is Cuba if a decades long trade embargo only results in the loss of millions?

He's just out of date -- like the cars.

Yeah, Comrade Fidel said "millions" but Cuba's gov't says $100 billion. If it was just Fidel I would chalk it up to his advancing age but since they seem serious I will point out the connection between socialists and irrationality. We've seen it play itself out the past few months in Greece where the lunatics are blaming capitalists for having had the temerity to lend Greece money when they most needed it.

It is amazing how socialism can eat ones brain!

Over 5 decades ago Fidel Castro confiscated private property - much of it owned by Americans - in the name of his "glorious" revolution. Today he claims that Cuba is owed "millions" - actually $100 billion - for the hardships imposed on Cuba by the US sanctions in response to that confiscation.
Really.
Now I understand that socialists, by definition, are brain-dead but this is just more proof of that axiom. Too funny.

Fidel is not going to let US off the hook that easily :)

HAVANA: Fidel Castro marked his 89th birthday today by insisting the United States owes Cuba "many millions of dollars" because of the half-century-old American trade embargo.

Castro spoke out in an essay published in local media a day before US Secretary of State John Kerry makes a historic visit to Cuba to reopen the US embassy as part of the countries' restoration of diplomatic relations.

The trade embargo that the United States slapped on communist Cuba in 1962, three years after Castro seized power by ousting a US-backed regime, remains in effect despite the thawing.

President Barack Obama wants Congress to lift it, although US officials say this will take time and is not an automatic part of the restoration of ties as it requires congressional action.

Many Republicans, who control both chambers of the legislature, oppose the idea, insisting Cuba has to improve its human rights record and make other democratic reforms.

Castro wrote: "Cuba is owed compensation equivalent to damages, which total many millions of dollars, as our country has stated with irrefutable arguments and data in all of its speeches at the United Nations."

He did not go into detail on precisely how much money he reckons Washington owes Havana. The Americans are also claiming compensation for US-owned property, such as real estate, that was confiscated when Castro took power.

Castro made no mention either of Kerry's visit to reopen the embassy, a step that comes eight months after Obama and Castro's successor and brother Raul announced plans to restore relations. It officially took effect July 20.

Fidel Castro ceded power to his brother in 2006, stepping down because of poor health.

Over the years, Fidel Castro has been a frequent contributor of essays to the communist party newspaper Granma and other media. Today's was his first piece since May 8.

"Writing is a way to be useful, if you keep in mind that we poor humans must be more and better educated in the face of the incredible ignorance that surrounds us all, except for researchers who use science to seek a satisfactory answer," Castro wrote.

Castro's 89th birthday is being celebrated with a wide array of events.

In town to take part is Bolivia's populist President Evo Morales, who often refers to Castro as his "wise grandfather."

I'd prefer not opening up to Cuba til both Castros are gone.

And why is that?

Don't pay them anything, but sure, lift trade restrictions, they're right there and they haven't been close to a threat in decades. As to the human rights and Democratic reforms who the hell are Senate Republicans kidding? We do business with China and Russia for God sakes.

All close allies of the U.S. such as Canada have maintained full diplomatic relations with Cuba. So I think it was about time USA did the same.

U.S. exerted great deal of pressure on its allies and friends to discourage them from trading with Cuba even though these allies and friends had full diplomatic relations with Cuba.

Fidel can take that bullshit and shove it up his ass.

I'm sure the Cuban people will be more than happy when he and his brother are both gone.

He can stamp his feet all he wants.

Not getting any money- and he knows it.

Cuba can write-off Reparations as repayment for all of the losses that American companies and individuals took, when Cuba nationalized everything.

Oh, and, we can toss-in the cost of the 1962 Blockade, which would not have been necessary, had Uncle Fidel not foolishly invited the Rooooskies to place nukes there.

It's a wash... time to press the Reset button... clean slate.
