I heard this story countless times growing up working on old cars and hanging around even older grease monkeys.

I always assumed in this story that the engine was an inline six or eight cylinder and the entire piston assembly had been removed from the crank shaft, leaving the cylinder shaped wood to be pounded into the empty hole.

This russian took it in a whole different direction...
