And for the record....one roomie of mine is Hispanic. She was born in my town. When the new roomie filled out his app and left it with me, she asked me specifically if he was legal. I said yes. He was born in mexico city, came here at 4 years of age, went thru the procedures to become a citizen. She said "GOOD! Because it is unfair to the rest of us that did that, when others sneak".

I didn't lose my job to Mexicans. My sympathies to those that did. However, in the last 25 years, Mexican "immigrants" have really been a major thorn in my side. Their stereotypical racial negative behavior has been the RUIN of many neighborhoods. Twice in 30 years, I have bought out of this mess only to have it come back at my heels again. I am tired of running, and besides, I can't anymore, I am sick and tired of running and just don't have the money anymore. We have to make a stand. And do the right thing.

US mínimum wages are about 10 times higher than in latin america. Employment is the main driver for ilegal immigration in the US.
There are only two ways of stopping illegal immigration:
1) Establishing controls at the hire points
2) Reducing the difference between US mínimum wages and the mínimum wages in latin america.

One must also remember migration is a two way street .

Lowering wages is not the only way. Big international American companies (e.g. Wallmart) could pay higher salaries in other countries .... not only they should, bu they can. I don't know the actual figures in retail , but in pharma the workers salaries represent between 1.5% and 2% of the cogs ( cost of goods sold).

Hmm ... I understand your scenario (the visa holder from Pakistan ) though it doesn't really apply to my case.

There is a very real shortage of health care workers in the US. I think it would be smarter to offer jobs in that sector than going wacko about how illegals are hurting the U.S.
True, most illegals are just taking unskilled jobs , but being proactive about the kind of labour the U.S. needs could change the situation for good ( no , it would not end illegal immigration , but a bad situation could bring an unseen beneffit).

It's both a lack of supply and employers wanting the cheapest alternative. The thing that gets me is that there are many unfilled jobs available to these folks, if they just filled out the paperwork instead of sneaking across the border, and hiding in the shadows. For instance, I know that California hires a significant number of legal Mexicans to help with farm work like picking fruit. I also recall many legal Mexicans working in landscaping in Phoenix.

Amnesty will not fix anything since the cycle will repeat itself. Not to mention that amnesty is not fair to the folks who follow the process, fill out the forms, and pay their fees and taxes.
