Why Obama’s Address to Schoolchildren Is Objectionable

Most common falsehood . . . . if you disagree with Obama's policies you're a racist.

Perhaps the most common falsehood which seems to get a pass is the above.

Very few people have ever posted such a goofy simplistic notion, yet people like you keep trying to insinuate that this argument is often used by Obama supporters.

Can you tell me who has done this on this board?

Can you cite examples of it being done?

I honestly believe that you believe this to be true, but I think that the nonsense being fed to you on TV is making you see what is not really there.

It might be happening on the very carefully edited propaganda on TV, but I don't think this charge is true on this board.

Of course, this board DOES have avowed racists, people who tell us they're NAZIs, but even those people are seldom charged as racists because of their complaints "about Obama's policies".

I'm crediting you for posting honestly here, Zoom.

But I think if you look at the reread of posts here you'll find that your charge is specious.

Question: How can terrified White people tell that a speech is objectionable before they know its content?

Answer: A black man can be scheduled to give it.

.

I just read the speech. Hate or love Obama it's a darn good speech. Nothing political at all. Emphasizes on personal choices and responsibility. Teaching kids that only you can paint your own future.

the GOP should to feel real silly now. But they probably don't. They'll find some way to spin this.

Obviously, you hate America and freedom and the constitution.

Good speech, great message. I watched on MSNBC, if you didn't, you missed the after speech comments from the Texas Tea Bagger. Mr. Tea Bag (and I'm being kind) is quite dumb.

I watched the speech and yes it was good. Stay in school, get an education, blah, blah, blah.

I don't have a problem with the speech . . . I have a problem with the speech giver.

Fair enough. Well, do a little research. I have a feeling you will find in HISTORY..this is the first time ever...EVER...when parents decided the president should not speak to their school and them actually requesting the school to either not show it or they will make sure their kids are not there in school. This says so much. It really does.

i know bush had a lot of haters, but that hate wasn't this deep.

during Bush's terms, no state said they wanted to secede from the United States of
America and openly say they hated America.

Do a little research on both these things.....then ask yourself why are they doing it now. What is so different about this president? LOL

I have no doubt this is the first time it's popping up, and I have no doubt it is mostly popping up for partisan reasons. However, that doesn't mean there shouldn't have been opposition to it before, and it doesn't mean there shouldn't be opposition to it now.

No state has said they want to secede from the Union.

You are going to find there will be a lot of things that never happened before happening now (for some strange reason).

Do you need a link to the nuts in Texas who want to seceed? I am at work and will get it for you later tonight if needed. These are elected people in front of constiuants screaming they want out of the United states of America. Seriously.

This is what it is coming down too. The school thing proves so much. No matter what this White house says, the republicans will oppose it.

The Birthers, the people calling him a socialist, the ones against this health care reform, the ones saying Afghan is his vietnam after 7 months, even though after 7 years in Iraq were fine. We can spend more money on war than any other country combined but cant have health care for everyone. etc etc. prove the opposition is just extreme. Opposition is a good thing, but to say the President cant speak to children says everything.

There are people in Texas who think they'd be better off out of the Union. However, the Texas legislature hasn't passed, or even introduced any legislation that I'm aware of, saying they wish to leave the Union. There is nothing on the ballot, that I'm aware of, in Texas asking people to vote on secession. Therefore, I would say it is simply a minority of people that truly want to secede and probably a few people that got caught up in the moment at the Tea Party. Also, you can find secessionist movements in probably every state of the Union, so we certainly can't pin it only on Texas.

When he stops spending my great-grand kids money; when he boots every single leftist, radical czar out; when he gets the government out of the auto and bank businesses; when he stops trying to shove government run health care down my throat; when he loses his belief and ideals of radicalism as taught to him by his Marxist professors, Rev. Wright, and his terrorist 'acquaintances'; when the most liberal-senator-ever-turned-president stops trying to take this country and turn it into some form of Obamunism . . . . then maybe I'll have some respect for him.

Wow, you hit almost every righty (but oh so wrongy) talky point in that small paragraph. I guess you can consider today seized?

Well that depends on when it was, I don't know offhand. I was in Middle School during the 2000 election, and not interested in politics. However, looking back, as I've maintained in this thread, I'm opposed to the President addressing students based on the fact that it's not their responsibility. So yes, I'd be opposed to Reagan, Bush, or Obama doing it.

No state has said they want to secede from the Union.

No state has said they want to secede from the Union? BULLSHIT. Ever heard of some douchebag named Rick Perry? He's the governor of Texas, and has said SEVERAL times that Texas (which is where I currently live) should secede.

Ever hear of some stupid bitch named Sarah Palin? Her husband is one of the leaders of a seperatiest group in Alaska, and she's also said that she supports her husband's views.

Oh yeah........both of those are Repugnicans. So much for patriotism eh?

Again the problem never was the speech....

Which is what makes me sad. We come from fearless people. The Founders were never afraid to confront issues they didn't agree with head on. The generations that fought to free the slaves and that stood to guarantee their rights didn't balk from confronting issues head on. The Greatest Generation confronted the Depression, Facism, and Nazism head on.

So Conservatives hear that Obama is getting ready to give a speech and thier response is to keep their children home or to shout that The President of the United States shouldn't be allowed to talk.

What lesson are you teaching your child? That when confronted with an opinion you disagree with you should run? That you should just cover your ears and hum to yourself? If the Founders had done that, we'd all be speaking the Queen's English and using Newton's notation for Calculus right now.

The Conservatives that decided to keep their kids home taught their kids to be cowards, and acted like cowards themselves. Teach your children to listen critically, argue with what they disagree with, and stand for what they believe in.

Could you provide a link where Perry states that Texas should secede?

Answering news reporters' questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

It would be WONDERFUL if TX did. LR GFS shows a sub 940 mb hurricane slamming into Texas in a week or so. Let them fend for themselves. Why should the federal government provide a free lunch for them??

Seriously, if Texas gets slammed, I'm going to form a protest group and head down to the area that gets decimated and tell them all to fend for themselves and stop applying for federal aid.

Do you hate the Jews?

Why do you think the government was behind 9-11?

Even if it's true that certain people in a state want to secede that doesn't mean a state wants to secede. Show me the legislation or ballot initiative calling for secession from the Union and we'll talk.

Like I said, that bitch Palin and her husband are part of a separatist movement for Alaska.

Why the fuck aren't you neo-con pricks talking about her?

As I read the many editorial columns and articles in support of Obama’s speech, I can see that many writers are very upset and emotional over criticism of Obama’s action. They also are clueless concerning the reasons why his address is unwelcome. They are name-calling. They are not bothering to mention, much less rebut, the reasoned objections of people like me.

I can at least articulate my reasons for objecting.

Such a speech blurs or crosses several boundaries that I believe there are good reasons to have in place.

The President’s constitutional powers are explicit. They include the "executive Power." They include being "Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States" and a few more listed in the Constitution, including preserving and protecting the Constitution. They do not include addressing schoolchildren.

I dont even have to read it to know this is the biggest crock of bullshit EVER! did anyone bitch like this when Bush read to school kids on 9/11...I THINK NOT! WOW! he gives a well thought out and well written speech on staying in school and taking personal responsability for ones actions and you all act like the biggest sin in the world was committed. The lesson plans that went along were OPTIONAL and many schools chose NOT to use them...so fuckin what! OH MY GOD MY KID IS BEING INDOCTRINATED WITH SOCIALIST PROPAGANDA!!! LOL WOW you people are truly sad sacks:cuckoo:

So because Palin and her husband might think Alaska would be better off out of the Union all of Alaska does? The claim was that states are wanting to secede because of Obama, yet I haven't seen any states introduce legislation or a ballot initiative calling for secession.

Not a neo-con.

Well maybe you should have read it because your straw-men arguments don't apply to this article.

I read his speech yesterday, did not get to see it today cause of work and found absolutely NOTHING wrong with it, I even read from some conservatives on other boards I go on that after reading it they would be proud to have their kids hear it...a bunch of fuss over nothing at all in my eyes.
