This Washington Times opinion bookends Alan Wolfe's 2006 essay titled “Why
Conservatives Can’t Govern.” My observation is purely anecdotal but Mr. Voegeli summation below nails my progressive friends to a tee. They share two core beliefs. First, a blind faith in all things government. Having worked for the federal government, I know its cumbersome, inefficient nature. They haven't worked for the federal government so it exists in their imagination as a shining example of collective will--results notwithstanding. Second, results do not matter. This quirk about my progressive friends continues to baffle me.
Proggies come in two flavors IMHO: Those who truly care about improving the human condition. Then there are those who manipulate masses of ignorant people with promises of free stuff or a better future in the form of taking from others and punishing their imagined oppressors. Those are simply seeking power and privilege for themselves. They know the lie and use it very effectively.
",,,columnist E.J. Dionne wrote, “There’s a
lesson here that liberals apparently need to learn over and over: Good
intentions without proper administration can undermine even the most noble
of goals.”
How is it possible that grownups, ostensibly dedicated to the proposition
that government can solve problems, must learn such an elementary lesson
over and over? One explanation for this anomaly is that liberals are,
regarding any social ill, adamant that government do something, but
unconcerned about whether it accomplishes anything.
Noble goals remain noble whether they’re attained or not. And liberals can easily demonstrate their own nobility by demanding new programs and bigger budgets, as opposed to the hard work of making sure existing programs are effective, or are abandoned if they can’t be made effective. If, as Georges Clemenceau said, war is too important to be entrusted to soldiers, the Obama administration may end up demonstrating that social problems are too important to be remedied by
liberals.
