His Man in Macau: Inside the Investigation Into Sheldon Adelsons Empire | Criminal Justice
Internal email and company documents, disclosed here for the first time, show that Adelson instructed a top executive to pay about $700,000 in legal fees to Leonel Alves, a Macau legislator whose firm was serving as an outside counsel to Las Vegas Sands.
The companys general counsel and an outside law firm warned that the arrangement could violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. It is unknown whether Adelson was aware of these warnings. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act bars American companies from paying foreign officials to affect or influence any act or decision for business gain.

The allegation turns up the heat on the Sands and Adelson, which federal prosecutors are investigating for alleged violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Adelson has also emerged as the leading contributor to the Republican Party and Super PACs backing Mitt Romney.
For example, the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission are probing the Las Vegas Sands for alleged bribery of foreign officials. The investigation was launched after a civil lawsuit by a former company executive alleged the casino had involvement with Chinese organized crime groups, known as Triads, connected to the junket business. The Sands is headed by Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino owner who has given millions toward Newt Gingrichs bid for the GOP presidential nomination. Adelson denies any wrongdoing.
Adelsons company is currently under federal investigation for possible violations of a federal anti-bribery law, relating to operations in Macau, the Chinese gambling district.
