"The San Jose Mercury-News reported this week that the NFL's political action committee has given thousands of dollars to members of a Congressional committee currently reviewing concussion research.

"Called the Gridiron PAC, the committee has given nearly $300,000 in campaign contributions to 41 of the 54 members of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committe, which began formal hearings last week on league safety issues, including concussions."

Why would they do that ?

Who are "they"?

I think it's obvious, money donated to pols is an effort to win support, it is the rare pol who turns down money unless and until it is exposed in the media.
In our local councils politicians declare an interest and leave the chamber if they have any interest.
It doesnt seem to be the case at national level.

The example you have quoted seems to be an outrageous abuse of the system. Any decision taken by this committee will be compromised.

Outrageous, legal and as common as day becomes night.
