Why do Republicans feel taxpayers should subsidize Wal-Mart and McDonald's?

"the middle class has been buried these pat 4 years" -- Biden Oct 2012

Biden is wrong

The middle class was buried by the Reagan revolution

Americans are spending $153 billion a year to subsidize McDonald’s and Wal-Mart’s low wage workers

The low wages paid by businesses, including some of the largest and most profitable companies in the U.S. – like McDonald’s and Wal-Mart – are costing taxpayers nearly$153 billion a year.

After decades of wage cuts and health benefit rollbacks, more than half of all state and federal spending on public assistance programs goes to working families who need food stamps, Medicaid, or other support to meet basic needs. Let that sink in — American taxpayers are subsidizing people who work — most of them full-time (in some case more than full-time) because businesses do not pay a living wage.

Why do Republicans feel taxpayers should subsidize Wal-Mart and McDonald's?

You've convinced me, we should stop giving tax dollars to low wage workers.
The Republican Medical Plan is if they are poor, let them die. Perfect
Problem is, the majority of voters do not feel as you do. So you will get to come along with us. And thanks for paying.

Deanie is the one whining about the money they receive. Is he a Republican?

Leftists sing praises about Obama's wonderful economy, let them find a good paying job then. Should be easy since Americans are prospering.
Leftists have jobs. It's the right wingernutjobbers who are unemployed. Why do you think they are whining about immigrants. Republicans can't complete. Donald Trump's base are called uneducated for a reason. Duh!

Low skilled illegals take away jobs from low skilled Americans.
Why don't you care about poor Americans?

i did not see republicans mentioned anywhere in that article....did i miss it?....

Did you expect to?

Who is protecting the low wage structure at Walmart and McDonalds? Who has refused a minimum wage increase for eight years? Who refused to expand Medicaid to struggling workers in Red States? Who has slashed corporate taxes while attacking the rights of workers to collectively bargain?

Who has slashed corporate taxes

Corporate taxes were slashed? When did that happen?

The headline is clearly intentionally misleading. The $153 billion subsidizes all of America's low-wage earners, not just McDonald's & Walmart's, and the Berkeley study included any family where at least 1 member works "at least 26 weeks a year and 10 hours a week."

That's not a "working family."

"...When 73 percent of people who benefit from major public assistance programs live in a working family, our economy isn’t operating the way it should – and could – be."

Well duh! By lowering the "working family" qualification to 260 hrs/yr (5 hrs/week) they managed to skew the results to suit their (and your) twisted loony leftist political agenda.

The fact remains any min wage law should be state and/or local ... not federal.

As always the whiny, sniveling, bleeding heart lefties must deal in half truths, misinformation and outright lies to make their case (but then, what is to be expected of Ken Jacobs, the Chair of Berkeley's Labor Center, rdean and the loony left cabal):

Who has slashed corporate taxes

Corporate taxes were slashed? When did that happen?

It started in the 80s and was picked up again by Bush

Its not just a US issue. We have the same problem in the uk. Corporations are the biggest recipients of handouts.
Our idiot chancellor recently had a moment of clarity and decided to raise the minimum wage recently. Not though any altruistic intentions. It merely helped him meet his spending targets.

Its not quite a black and white issue but should public money subsidise corporate profits ?

Here is a thought, does this sort of subsidy depress wages ?

I think it might.

You are correct

Republicans attack the poor and working poor from both ends.

Not handing out free money to people that doesn't belong to them does not equal attacking the poor. Stealing money from people who have more and redistributing it to others, however, does equal attacking the working class.

They support policies that hold down wages and benefits and then try to slash government assistance

The only wage and benefits you deserve is what you and your employer agree to when you take the job. If you don't like the agreement seek employment elsewhere. Nobody is forced at gun point to work at Walmart.

Why do Democrats think an entry level Fast Food job is a career?
The answer is they don't.

Stay out of Democrat schools because they can't prepare you for success, all they teach is subsistence and dependency
Sounds good to me.

Here that right wingers? Stay out of school. You don't want to be taught subsistence and dependency. Listen to Frank. Stay away from school and you've got it made. There may be 5.8 million jobs available for people with skills, but school isn't the answer.

Yes, they do. if you are pushing for a living wage for something, you imply someone can make a living off it, long term.

The idea of a entry level job is to enter, get better, and move on to something better. If someone needs gov assistance because the labor they add doesn't have the value of a living wage, then so be it. At least they are working, and hopefully, making more money by doing something more valuable.

Well, why don't workers strike against Wal-Mart, like they did for fast food jobs, and refuse to work there unless Wal-Mart improves their working conditions?

I have no idea. maybe because the people working at wal mart in the entry level jobs realize that those jobs aren't a career, and for some reason the people advocating a living wage think working at McDonalds as fry packer or cashier is.

Taxing the wealthy to benefit the society that they have prospered from is what modern societies do

Once again Rderp can't figure out basic math...

If we raise the national minimum wage more people will be making fucking minimum wage or no wage.

It won't be 153 billion a year it would probably be like 500 billion a year.
