Why do only democrats oppose child sweatshops?

I oppose child swaetshops, but I do believe we have a few domestic priorities right now. How about if that useless organization known as the UN try and tackle that one? What do we pay dues for again?

Have you thought this through?

That's gonna put the ChiComs out of business, then they'll stop financing Neo- Nazis (aka: Democrats) Record Deficits.

How is that going to work in reality? This is going to be like preventing banks from charging for overdrafts and as a result, we lose free checking.

The Surgeon General has determined that Democrats are hazardous to your freedom and prosperity and should be avoided at all costs

Because republicans (and many democrats) are corporate tools or is that fools. Remember they defended the Chinese as they poisoned our children, now another one is saying Obama is being too harsh with BP. Birds of a feather flock together.

"People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices. It is impossible indeed to prevent such meetings, by any law which either could be executed, or would be consistent with liberty and justice. But though the law cannot hinder people of the same trade from sometimes assembling together, it ought to do nothing to facilitate such assemblies; much less to render them necessary." Adam Smith

Remind me of the definition of a "child sweatshop" again? I dont think there is an accepted definition. If "sweatshop" is "any place I wouldn't want to work" then we have plenty of those here. Universities for starters.
This is typical of the Dums: emotionally charged language lacking precision leading to legislation without any thought as to what will happen if passed.

During the Renaissance, children apprenticed to guilds and masters when they were 13, what's wrong with that? Should Michelangelo have stayed home or at a failing public school and not apprenticed with Domenico Ghirlandaio and not been allowed to stay with Lorenzo de Medici?

Are you saying that children who work in sweatshops are gay geniuses?

During the Renaissance peolpe only lived into their forties (if they were lucky). So a 13 year-old was almost middle aged.

And being an apprentice to a guild or a master is a far cry from working long hours in sweat shop turning out cheap crap for the masses.

As usual, you're the one who's wrong.

Although the Renaissance was a time of significant change in comparison to the Middle Ages, there were times of both peace and prosperity, and war, disease and famine. For the average man in the street (or village) daily life had changed little since the Middle Ages. Diet was similar, life was short (an average life expectancy of 30 - 35 years in most parts of Europe, with perhaps a 50% child mortality rate within the first year of life), and war and disease were commonplace.

Statistics not your strong point, eh?
Do you see that there is a correlation between high infant mortality and low average life span? If half your population dies before age 2 and the other half lives to age 80 then you have an average of 40. But that is rather misleading.

While republicans remain silent when the subject comes up?

Why, because they don't want to inhibit the free-market! Hell, it's got the word "Free" right in there, meaning if you oppose it, you oppose freedom!

They only suddenly become human rights advocates when the guilty nation coincidentally has massive natural resource reserves.

Keep in mind as you tar and feather the Chinese with a wide and lead dripped brush, that American toy manufacturers set up shop over there to take advantage of the lax regulations. Little Johnny might have been exposed to chemicals through his toy truck, but little Sun Ling was exposed to the chemicals and paint that painted thousands of them, and Mattel and Toys R Us profited from it all.

Those damn republicans....it's all their fault.
Anyone want to take off their partisan glasses for a few moments, and stop pointing fingers? All of this couldn't have happened without both parties getting their hands dirty.
sheesh....

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Clinton closed years of political and economic debate Tuesday, and sealed a major achievement of his administration by signing a bill extending permanent, normal trade status to China.

"Today we take a major step toward China's entry into the World Trade Organization and a major step toward answering some of the central challenges of this new century," Clinton said in a bipartisan White House ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

"Trade with China will not only extend our nation's unprecedented economic growth, it offers us a chance to help shape the future of the world's most prosperous nation and to reaffirm our own global leadership for peace and prosperity."

Some opponents worried that the U.S. would be unable to influence Beijing over human rights concerns without a yearly vote on trade. To counter those concerns, the legislation calls for setting up a congressional-executive commission to monitor human rights in China
