Isn't God just part of evolution's natural selection? If not, why not?
Perhaps God is like the human appendix, once serving a critical purpose for the survival and propagation of the species but now a largely useless organ, prone to infection.

The modern Deist would slightly turn your point and argue that yes God was necessary, did the prime and necessary thing, and then went away because God was not necessary to man's destiny.
