Why are there still 143,000 troops in Asia/Europe 70 years after WWII?

I have often pointed out our military spending is as high as it was during WWII, when adjusted for inflation, and yet we are not in a World War.

A lot of that high spending is because of the same reasons which have caused our health care costs to skyrocket. Bigger and better, and therefore more costly, gadgets.

I think our allies need to start picking up their own defense tab. The reason Europe is able to afford so many social welfare programs is because the US is subsidizing those programs on the backs of our taxpayers by picking up the cost of their defense.

If we threw the cost of their defense onto their budgets, Europe's "safety net" would come crashing down to Earth.

So let's do that. Stop paying for everyone else's defense. Stop subsidizing their safety nets as they look down their noses at us.

Excellent point...one that is completely lost by liberal loons when people consider the cost of healthcare in Europe compared to U.S. As you say the reason Europe AND Canada can afford so many social programs is because their military budgets are tiny compared to what it would be if America did not exist, or we only protected ourselves.
I absolutely believe all countries beniffiting from U.S. protection should have to pay America for that service...and tax the citizenry to pay for it.

Well, alot of that changed during Desert Storm after most of our units were redeployed stateside. We only have a fraction in Germany that we had before 1990.

The wall came down. Russia has reset relations with us, thanks to Hillary. No further threat exists. Anyone who doesn't agree can Crymea river.

Those thousands of troops and supporting facilities and equipment are there mainly to protect American missions in that region, a good example of which would be our Benghazi Consulate and its staff !!

I am attempting to remember the name of a woman who had a leadership role at State Dept. during the Benghazi incident...pants suits come to mind. She had a boss who was Commander in Chief who apparently had some influence over how those thousands of troops would be deployed...

The 2006 congressional elections and Obama's win in 2008 clearly showed that the post 9/11 feelings towards Muslims embraced killing them, not sacrificing American soldiers and spending $10 million-a-day of taxpayers money building up an Islamic Republic. Not the answer, but our 'Good Friends' like Saudi Arabia are the biggest supporters of Terrorism in the world. Other 'Good Friends' supporting Terrorism include Turkey and Pakistan. They're the problem.

Syria and Iraq have never supported Al Qaeda or ISIS. Most of the 9/11 Terrorists were Saudis, and the recent Terrorists in California received funding & training in Saudi Arabia before entering the U.S. So if you really wanna end Islamic Terrorism, start with our 'Good Friends' the Saudis.
