sure , it's part of an exploration package--for what?
advancing space flight/space technology= ok-----but trying to find life = waste
if they want to advance space technology, why keep going to Mars?
The mission takes the next step by not only seeking signs of habitable conditions on Mars in the ancient past, but also searching for signs of past microbial life itself.

Whether in 100 years or 1000. Mars will be colonized. Poses at this point the best bet as now water presence is confirmed.

Unfortunately, it's the most similar planet to our own. Venus is 800 degrees and Jupiter and Saturn are huge gas balls -- where nothing can survive (equipment, not life)

I don't see a ''lot'' of people going to Mars in a 1000 years
I wouldn't say ''colonizing''
maybe a few--maybe

Aside from the fact that eventually we will be colonizing Mars every scientific expedition provides side benefits from the technological advances put into the equipment and transportation.

Colonizing on Mars would be the base operations to go exploring with other space probes on other planets outside of our own system.

I do not think it is possible
1. will the US have the $$$$$ ? very questionable
a. we are talking BIG $$$$$$
--creating a base, keeping it active AND advancing/ it enlarging it /supplying it/etc?
this would take many trips to and from earth and/or technology only seen in Star Wars/Trek = fake
...$$$$$$$$$$
..the way it's going now, the US will be needing that $$$$$ just to stay above water
..the US is in HUGE debt--it would be stupid to spend that $$$$$-- for what?
2. needs to be ok'd through congress/etc---good luck with that as we see what happens when something needs a yes/no vote--questionable

again, where is all this $$$$$$$ coming from?
also, colonizing??
do you know how much $$$$$ it takes to send one, tiny un-manned rover to Mars?

It is literally in our DNA to explore, expand and to propagate the species further and further or become stagnant then eventually extinct. Humans wouldn't stay on one continent and sure as hell won't stay on one world.

We are the first species on this world with the ability to insure our long-term survival. We better damn well use that ability.

The Earth has finite lifespan, we as a species can choose not to.

thinking realistically, the way the US is going financially, it's going to be very difficult to just send a manned lander to mars---nothing more

Any major effort in Space is going to me a multi-national one. Space will suffer/benefit from the same market forces we have on earth. Modules, rovers, probes, etc… will be made where it is cheaper and exported to the nations that have heavy launch capabilities.

Low-tech; non strategic missions will be completely outsourced to these nations in some cases with LEO vehicles being launched from distant countries.

When Humans go, there will likely be fewer Americans on the vessel than other nations. I’m probably not going to be here when it happens but it would be interested to see the inter-national politics of who is going to go down the ladder first to set foot on Mars.

Actually the plot line on Mars tonight on NatGeo.

Some hear are simply arguing against the inevitable.
They were the same voices that said humans will never fly. Or achieve the many wonders we have.
At least enough voices ignore the naysayers.
Now I gotta go...
Mars is on.

Why Mars?

Why not settle the bottom of the ocean?
It is closer
