I've been thinking about the US Government shutdown and the potential for a US credit default and came up with a basic question: who would actually gain from such a shutdown and default?
There have been many who talked about a default causing a world-wide economic recession and the potential for a disastrous impact on the US.
But ... who would desire, even delight in such an outcome?
The only entities I see desiring such an outcome are those who want disorder, conflict, and to hurt or destroy the Western world and the US in particular -- al-Qaeda and Iran. They both have often stated their hatred of the US. Crippling the US would remove a major stumbling block in Iran's plans. Causing a major adverse impact to the US without having to sacrifice even a single suicide bomber would surely be a dream outcome for al-Qaeda.
This might be a significant unanticipated consequence to a default.
