Who will voters blame if we default?

because their laws cant pass our full government.

The other elected officials are not required to do whatever the right wing lead house says.

Voters need to look in the mirror when assessing blame.

Not all of us, BA.

In this case I'm afraid that the only voters who need to look into the mirror are those who voted for the wankers who are ready willing (and able?) to bring this nation down economically.

That would be those voters who bought into the Tea Party's insane beliefs about how to deal with this problem.

Not all Republicans, not all Democrats, not all independents, but JUST the people who voted for the OBSTRUCTIONISTS in Congress.

unfettered spending will bring the this nation down economically. the only place you can have unlimited spending is in the land of unicorns and cotton candy.

Has nayone told you you're an idiot recently?

We are in this situation because Obama and the Democrats spent 3 years passing trillions of dollars in "stimulus" programs that have left us with the highest sustained unemployment in history. They have passed the most expensive social program in history, one Obama promised would not add one dime to the deficit.
It is Democrats and Obama voters who are responsible here.

But this isn't a blame game. We need to look ahead to see how to fix it. The GOP has proposed several resolutions to fix the mess. The Democrats have vetoed every one ofthem. Their proposals can be summarized below:

Yes those obstructionist senators and president are truly to blame. I totally agree with Ed and Willow.

Those democrats who want to keep raising the debt and spending away and those repbulican's whom agree with them are obstructing the true and difficult changes we need to make which the new republican house has been trying to bring us since the Ryan plan.

Correct. However, the country voted the right wing lead house into power and that is where bills originate.

So if they keep trying to pass budgets and bills about the debt ceiling and the dems keeps saying no and the president keeps threatening a veto then who is obstructing the changes we need and the debt ceiling issue?

Does anyone think that the Clowns in DC, unless they have a balanced budget ammendment, will stop spending like drunken sailors??

I don't. Anything they do now can be undone by any adminisration that follows.

All States, except one, have to balance their budgets. They cannot spend what they don't have.

Should be the same for the Fed Govt. If they don't have it. They can't spend it.

What a novel idea.

Do either of them come any where near proposing a pathway toward fair taxes?

The root of our problem with both congress and the presidency lay in their ass-u-me-ed power to tax us differently from each other.

Simple Taxes = Fair Taxes

Fair taxes, budget balanced by law. It doesn't have to be rocket science - it's complicated because someone is making money on the complications. Follow the money.

Some numbers — from an Institute for Policy Studies report released this past spring — can help us better visualize just how monumental this political failure has been. If corporations and households taking in $1 million or more in income each year were now paying taxes at the same annual rates as they did back in 1961, the IPS researchers found, the federal treasury would be collecting an additional $716 billion a year. In other words, if the federal government started taxing the wealthy and their corporations at the same rates in effect a half-century ago, the federal debt to investors would almost totally vanish over the next decade

Part of the problem lay in how much money 'investors' are making buying and selling US debt. A balanced budget law would put a group with a LOT of political power in the unemployment lines. Excessive debt is GOOD for some and they have the campaign money to protect the status quo.

Not according to ALL the polls. The Republicans started it. The created a crisis when there was none.

Can you read polls?

No, guy, the crisis was started when your guy ran up 4 Trillion in new debt in three years. Otherwise, the last, non-controversial raising of the debt ceiling would have held us over for years.

I do think the GOP has gotten most of what it wants, it should declare victory and take the deal on the table.

The problem started in 2003 when PAYGO expired and GWBush opened up the treasury credit card to his buddies in the pharma industry via Medicare D and all the rest of his buddies via WAR with a tax cut.

Budget balanced by law / fair and simple taxes.

As or who gets the blame??

The Prez gets the kudos when things go right and he gets the blame when things don't.

Just the way it is.

If Obama lets the USA default - he gets the blame. Sorry.

Why would the Executive be responsible for a failure on the part of the Legislative? The House in particular.

Other than partisan reasons, of course.

He's the leader of the country, that's why. He had a rubber stamp congress for 2 straight years and he couldn't (or worse, wouldn't) even pass a budget! There is no excuse for that kind of irresponsibility.

We need a leader that gets things done, not one who blames everyone else. He's a major disappointment.

PS- the house already passed a bill. They'll pass another one Weds. They've done their job.

Their job is to pass a bill that is also acceptable to the Senate. So far, they have not. The House does not get to dictate what they want and just ignore the Senate. If that were the case, then we would not need the Senate.

The simple fact is that the top 10% of income earners take in about 45% of all income in the US, but they only pay around 30% of all federal taxes. Whenever we hear how the top 1% or top 10% pays 70% of taxes, they only include income taxes. It's a complete joke that nobody ever points this out. Income taxes only account for about 40% of all federal revenue. The middle class and poor are paying the rest. We have a revenue problem and a spending problem, but the fact is that we have a bigger revenue problem than we do a spending problem, yet Republicans want to keep their ultra-low tax rates and only cut programs that help the middle class and the poor.

If the Democrats would step up and point this out, voter sentiment would change drastically against Republicans. The Dems need to do a better job of making this distinction. At the same time though, Dems also need to seriously address long term costs of many programs that must be revamped, specifically Medicare.

No, Zander, old boy, they will not. They will blame the people who have been using that stick for years. And, all the while, increasing the debt.

And, if the economy goes down as bad, or worse, than in the dirty thirties, they will blame those for whom the GOP is working. And gated communities will be no defense.

People, this ain't a game. The GOP is going to shut down our government to protect the very wealthy from paying the same per centage of taxes as you or I. Simple fact. They would destroy the sytem rather than have an equitable taxation of our citizens.

So, if they win, and the President caves, the very wealthy gain even a larger share of the national income, and the middle class and working poor lose their retirement, and access to healthcare after retirement. So we in the middle class can take a slow economic death, with the very wealthy gaining all, or we can let them crash the system, and they go down with us immediatly. I much prefer the latter.

Yep, and who do you think has the guns? Do you think that the citizens, even those of very conservative leanings, will think the system is fine when their children are hungry and the wealthy are living in the lap of luxury a mile or two down the road?

You guys really need new schtick. If you confiscated every dollar held by the evil wealthy, you'd have about $980,000,000,000.

It's a spending problem... unfortunately the uber Left has promised so much to so many, it's all crumbling under its own weight. It's over; get used to it.
