Lack of respect for politicians and gov't- Nixon and Reagan.
Lack of money to keep up mental and Physical infrastructure-Voodoo Reaganomics.
Depression- The above and Pub deregulation and lack of SEC enforcement. Blaming it on the gay guy is an easily disproved big lie. Like those entitled bums, no Global warming, creationism etc...the world is aghast at the brainwashed idiocy...

Who do you believe is more responsible for the terrible condition of our country?

We’re experiencing a serious economic downturn, as with many components of civilization these things are cyclical; neither caused nor cured by politicians or political dogma.

We may try to mitigate the symptoms of a bad economy, there are things government can do to encourage recovery and steer the economy in the right direction; but it will heal in its own manner in its own time.

The worst thing we can do is point fingers and play the blame-game.

Needless to say we’re doing the worst thing.

illegals crossing the border eating away at our resources didn't help either,,,and u wonder why it costs $10.00 hr. just to breathe at the doctors office? never mind the cost of a pill.

My answer is neither. Our country is not ruined, our government is dysfunctional because of special interests, campaign fundraising, blind voting and a lack of qualified candidates willing to fill the positions.
I agree, neither party or both, take your choice, is responsible. It's not so much what the US has done wrong over the last 50 years, it's what the rest of the world has done right. Third world countries have advanced more in the last 50 years than they have in the last 200. The emergence of the Arab states, communist block countries, some third world countries and China as a major economic powers have created opportunities for US businesses but have also create huge problems. Foreign cheap labor markets have devastated American manufacturing and have turned the greatest industrial nation on earth into a country that consumes everything and produces very little.

Lastly and possibly most important has been the globalization of American corporations. The growth in wealth in foreign countries has resulted in huge investments in US businesses transforming our largest American corporation into global corporations whose interest are global not necessary American. Lobbying efforts of these corporations, particular in relation to foreign trade have made it quite clear that their interest and the interest of the American people are not same.

Bush didn't drive the economy into a ditch (thats what 20% of Americans think),,,MAYBE IT WAS PEOPLE WHO MADE UNDER $40,000 a year who bought $250,000 homes, and used up their lines of equity like it was an ATM machine? how about them? weren't they the primary cause?
Blame for that rightfully goes to the lenders, not the borrowers who were led by unscrupulous loan officers to believe their mortgages were fixed when in fact they were deceptively worded ARMs. The federal regulations which had prevented this type of predatory activity had been removed along with many other regulations that once prevented the kind of devious maneuvering by Wall Street and the banks which has brought about the near collapse of the U.S. economy and ruin of the middle class.

Watch the video documentary, Inside Job. It's an important education.

As far as Bush is concerned, he is not alone responsible for the damage but he played a very big part in causing it.

god what an awful poll. Cant you people at least attempt something halfway decent?

Would you prefer a poll about tv sitcoms or video games? Lol

hot chicks?

I voted both because we have a Congress which has been bought and both sides are at fault. As a college intern working on a bill I saw this first hand in 1980. It has only gotten worse.

Corporate profits are rising at a higher rate than revenue. Why because corporations are massively shifting jobs to low cost countries. Ask anyone who works in a Fortune 100 firm how many jobs are backfilled overseas. The numbers are staggering.

Investors are smartly diversifying their investments overseas again enhancing their returns at the expense of US jobs. Yet both sides want to reduce capital gains which does nothing to help US jobs when the investments happen in China.

Neither side has a policy to address this situation. Why? Because both sides are owned by K-Street and the corporations/investors who fund K Street don't want the issue addressed.

Overall. Who's policies have led us down this path over the last 50 years?

The last 50 years of both sides of the isle has lead us down this road to where we are today. Both parties are responsible for this insatiable appetite to expand the growth and scope of the Federal Government and it has failed miserably.

During the GOP debates last night that weirdo Cramer on CNBC was screaming about the United States bailing out Italy--LOL. Well who is the hell is bailing us out.

You know it is not manufacturing at risk anymore. That ship sailed a long time ago and if anything is reversing slightly.

The problem now is linked to the transoceanic fiber optic cables that allow for the easy outsourcing of back-office jobs and cheap teleconferences with overseas employees. Everyday I have teleconferences with people in Singapore, Costa Rica, Bucharest. Pick your low cost geography.

Finance, HR, Marketing Services and even Engineering jobs are all being moved overseas in significant numbers.

Who is responsible?

The BANKSTERS.

What party do they own?

BOTH of them.

Time to grow up, Gramps.

I answered "conservatives" which was probably predictable given that it's me, but I want to clarify that if you had asked by party (Democrats or Republicans) instead of by ideology (liberals or conservatives), I would have said both.

We have been on the wrong track since at least 1981, and in some ways since 1977. But Carter only put part of it in place and half-heartedly (increased military spending, anti-labor attitude). Reagan increased both of those and also flattened the tax system and began the deregulation process. He also gave voice to the economic ideology that ruined us, even though he wasn't personally responsible for all of the damage.

His successors have kept us on the same course. That includes Bill Clinton, not just the two Bushes. So far, Obama hasn't undone the damage, either, or really tried to. So Democrats and Republicans are both to blame. But all of the policies that have hurt us have been conservative policies, even when put in place by a Democrat, as Clinton signed the repeal of Glass-Steagal and pushed through NAFTA and GATT.

Yea, you would prefer we emulate the roaring success of the USSR.

I voted both, because all Americans - much like citizens of plenty of other countries - are responsible. We sat back and knowingly voted for corrupt politicians, purely because of the letter after their name. Shame on us. And shame on everyone who votes in their own best interests instead of the best interests of the country.

god what an awful poll. Cant you people at least attempt something halfway decent?

Then stay the fuck out of it, dumbass...

Conservatism set up a road block for separating from England and has actively been engaged in setting up "road blocks" ever since. And when in power they smash the very mechanisms that allow for prosperity, peace and the health of the American population.
