There is real concern among scientists that there can be another bat originated viral pandemic, and indeed local outbreaks have already occurred, due to expansion of human populations and industry/roads into previously isolated areas. The Covid outbreak may have only been the first of other major coming pandemics beginning in this way — whether or not Chinese researchers accidentally expedited its release or not.

I am not saying the Covid pandemic was handled well, nor am I crying that the sky is falling. I am not a scientist and do not claim to have a good grasp of this potential danger. But I am certainly not a “conspiracy theorist” either, or someone who thinks political partisanship provides insight into the likelihood of our facing another, possibly even more dangerous, viral threat.

Humanity and all of our international medical institutions must stay on guard against such dangers. We must also be better prepared psychologically to face any such future without going bezerk. To be unprepared — as we largely were last time during Covid — only makes us more vulnerable.
