Which is Better?

Unfettered capitalism is championed by people that believe everyone is in it for themselves and don't have the best interests of the country in mind.

No one risks everything to open a business in order to help the country.

None of you are going to be there to help if a business fails are you?

No one is going to risk anything until a government secures the location and maintains some basic infrastructure like roads and schools. Not in this day and age.

Joe sez.... for the Motherland!

LOL

Joe sez.... the only thing worse than misusing the tool called government is fearing it from a distance.

A business can write off its losses. So yeah, we are all "there" to help a business that fails.

Red herring.

Roads and utilities are ubiquitous. We are not living in the past where the only road was a horse track anymore.

So you think the tax code is tantamount to the country helping a failed business?

Now that's funny.

Which is better... Raw, unfettered Capitalism or Capitalism that's guided and directed?

'Intelligent Design' :dunno: 'Survival of the Most Fit'

:eusa_think: Could what's 'better' change over history?

unfettered got us a burning Great Lake from all the polution.

guided and directed got us what we have now.

So I'd say both are good in small doses

minimum regulation to prevent harm, and nothing more from the government.

I'd say that if the US doesn't figure out how to best use the tool of government in its economy, the Chinese are going to be the economic force for the foreseeable future. Those people run their country like a big, ruthless corporation.

Guided capitalism can beat communism with market-place freedoms, but not with its head up its ass arguing social and cultural conflict on a national scale.

No they don't.

They run it like the government has absolute control.

The most ruthless corp can't make you sleep at work or put you in prison for not working 16 hour days.

With the Constitution, china won't happen here.

That's kind of my point, Bro'.

My point is, unless the USA starts doing a better job of using the tool of government, our kids will look to the Chinese for economic leadership.

Of course, the other side of that coin is that if the USA can stop squabbling over social issues on a national scale, figure out a way to get the money and corruption out of political campaigns and use the tool of government to ensure justice and fairness in the market place, the creativity of our free system will smoke the competition for leadership going forward.

We truly do face an economic cross-road for 2013 / 2014.

When we had less government "help" we were WAY ahead of the rest of the world.

We don't need to learn how to use the tool, we just need a smaller one.

and yeah

That was a punny dirty joke as well

Liberals need to ask themselves how do "greedy" people get rich in a free market without producing something that people need or want?

Also, how can you get a monopoly in a free market system when everyone and their brother are free to compete with you? Thus forcing you to continue to lower your prices, cut cost, and/or innovate.

Fear seems to drive many of these types of discussions. Many of you want the assurance that the outcome of any endeavor will satisfy your child-like wishes. That some guardian angel like presence, will be there to ward off all suffering and pain. Government has become a new religion for many of you and you seem to pray to it for deliverance everyday.

Wise up - there are no guarantees, as there is no permanence. Empires, fortunes and governments will continue to rise and fall. Taking the unfettered route requires courage but is eminently better than living on your knees, praying to the god of government.

It's really less difficult than you imagine:
“In politics as in religion, my tenets are few and simple. The leading one of which, and indeed that which embraces most others, is to be honest and just ourselves and to exact it from others, meddling as little as possible in their affairs where our own are not involved. If this maxim was generally adopted, wars would cease and our swords would soon be converted into reap hooks and our harvests be more peaceful, abundant, and happy.”

"A better job of using...." implies better. That could be smaller in some areas and bigger in other areas.

:dunno: Do we really need a military budget that is twice what the next nine countries in the top ten military budgets combined spend?

Should we simply let our roads and bridges continue to crumble?

It's all about priorities.

Justice in the market is a primary responsibility of government. How are we doing? :dunno:

we already know, based on the failure of laissez faire capitalism, that there need to be rules... rules preventing monopolies, rules for fair labor standards, rules for fair wages... rules for workplace safety. anyone who says we shouldn't have those rules doesn't know their history.

We know based on something that never happened?

When did laizzes faire capitalism fail?

When the government had to step in and insist on limiting labor to adult workers getting time and a half over 40, profits be damned.

All that did is prevent people from being able to generate extra income by working more hours. Instead they have to get a second job for less money.

thanks government!

The best way to use government in our economy is not to use it. Government is like gasoline. The later is great for putting in cars but terrible for drinking. The same goes when it comes to using government to improve the performance of the economy.

Not true. Many businesses have opened factories where there are no roads and no schools. They built those things themselves.

True. Gasoline is an incredibly powerful tool that has the power to multiply productivity as well as burn everything down.

Better learn how to use the tools, Monkeys. They're not just going to go away.
