We need to raise the Social Security and Medicare eligibility ages to 70 or, better still, make them permanently indexed to 9 percent of the population.

Less than 6 percent of the population was eligible for Social Security when it was enacted.

9 percent of the population was eligible for Social Security and Medicare when Medicare was enacted in 1965.






Today, over 13 percent are eligible. We have 12 million more people collecting Social Security than there should be. We are living far longer than our ancestors, we should be working longer.

The biggest issue with SS is that it was never meant to be the sole income, it was supposed to be a supplement.

Now it's just a mess...but likely a solvable one.

But to solve anything we need honest politicians. Good luck with that.

A "safety net" is insurance, not a way of life.

They have been transformed by politicians from "insurance" into "entitlements".

But when you read the language of their regulations, they are still insurance. But you won't hear any politician ever call them that.

Even Republicans, who used to be violently opposed to these schemes, don't hesitate to scare the bejeesus out of seniors when it suits them. Remember all that screaming by the GOP about Obama taking money away from Medicare to pay for Obamacare? Sheer hypocrisy.

On the Democratic side, we have people defending "entitlement programs". There is no justification for not reforming entitlement spending by raising the eligibility ages for SS and Medicare.

On the Republican side, we have people defending Defense spending which has more than doubled since 9/11. There is no justification for making war level spending permanent. Defense spending can be radically cut without jeopardizing our military readiness.


All of these people are fiscal liberals. All of them. A D or R after their name makes no difference. They are all willing to borrow from China to continue their mad spending, and they will continue to raise the debt ceiling to keep that borrowing going forever. Both parties are completely unified in this attitude, despite the theater they put on for their partisan rubes.

We must rid ourselves of these fleas. Forget about party, and start thinking about our country before all of our wealth is transferred to China and the Middle East.
