What's the capital of Israel?

So the white house press guy doesn't want to answer completely pointless questions meant to disrupt a news conference? I don't blame him for ignoring the useless loudmouth twits in regards to their pointless question that seems to be way out of context. There comes a certain point when the person in the front just has to ignore the rabble and let them make the stupid assumptions they wish.

If only they ignored disruptive twats more often we might get something done.

Oh, and the only people who admitted to not knowing the capital was the woman who was playing a game and the loud guy next to her. If it was geography class and the teacher ignored the question there might be a point, but this is a damned white house press conference, and not a college class. Go back to your office and google it, don't waste the white houses time asking them for geography lessons.

No there is more to it than that. He talked about "our policy" WTF does that mean? He could have said Jerusalem, NEXT!!!!!!!! but he didnt, why?

Netanyahu answered that question way back when he was here. The obama policy is that Jerusalem should be divided with half being in Israel and the other half in palestine, much like Berlin was divided. Netanyahu said "Jerusalem is not a divided city, it is the capital of Israel". The official obama policy is to change the capital to Tel Aviv and divide Jersusalem. That hasn't changed.

Israel was called upon, at its birth, to write its own Constitution. They were given an arbitrary time limit. They chose to ignore the time limit and they have approached the task more or less piecemeal. But one of their basic laws (i.e., Constitutional laws) is that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

Then the UN Security Council (with the US abstaining) declared that the brotherhood of man would refuse to recognize the capital of Israel.

Ok. So, the world chooses not to recognize that Israel is the capital of Israel. Their lack of recognition, however, doesn't change the Israeli basic law. Jerusalem is still the capital of Israel.

(The US was formed in large part by stealing land from the Native American Indians. IF the Security Council declared that America was now the land of the American Indian and that we all had to move out and they wouldn't recognize us as legitimate anymore, would that change the fact that we are still here and not moving? In short, they can SAY whatever the fuck they want, but that doesn't make their words real.)

The UN Security council did just that! According to them, North and South Dakota should be given back and the people who live there forcibly removed.

I though the capital of a nation is where the seat of the nation is located.

Tel Aviv is currently the capital of Israel, but the Israelis are planning to move it to Jerusalem.

No.

Capital of Israel: Jerusalem or Tel Aviv? | United with Israel
Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, but the financial center is Tel Aviv. Like our capital is Washington DC but the financial center is New York City. No one would say that New York City is the capital of the US.

The WH will not say that the capital of Isreal is Jerusalem because they don't want the heat from the Muslim community. This is the only reason why.

Only problem is that every day, this WH pisses friends of the United States off. Ok, I'm over exaggerating with the every day part, but still, when a sitting President will not recognize a country or their capital, it's bad news.

Also, I think the question was asked after the BBC in a report said the Jerusalem was the capital of Isreal and a few Muslims in England got Butthurt over it.

Exactly. They know damned well that the capital of Israel is Jerusalem, but they won't say it because they know it will annoy Islamists in the Middle East and they're just so busy kissing ass over there.

And yes... the BBC omitted Israel's capital from their website, while posting like information about other countries:
BBC's Olympics webpage omits Israel's capital - Israel Culture, Ynetnews

no, they won't bother with it because the white house is not a high school geography class.

Then what is the White House's "policy" on what the capital of Israel is?

Tel Aviv as the capital isn't a change. It was the capital at the founding and, as far as the UN and US are concerned, still the capital.

Is that a solution, Wounded Knee and round them up onto reservations?

no matter how much i drink or how many times I wack my head with a hammer i still cannot sink to your level of insanity. It is a failing of mine to not see a twisted and really stupid point of view, and i guess i will just have to live with being too smart to understand the retards.

It is insane to expect the president to lead?

Who knew.

Is there some reason for them to suspect obama has new policy? Aftyer 3 and a half years of the same thing should we be worried that all of a sudden obama is going to forget everything he has done and start doing something completely new despite never having mentioned it? This is the same irrational fear and bullshit where the right claims obama is going to take our guns despite supporting america's gun rights. There is no base to the question, and here is nothing behind it.

Is there some reason for them to know Obama's policy? Do you know it? Why do you think a reporter is a right winger just because they actually ask a hard question in a press briefing? When MSNBC asks about the leaks from the White House are they right wing too?

if the point of the question was to point out the political disagreements between the world and isreal then they should have made a question about that. The topic should also be much different than the claim that trhe Obama admin doesn't know what the capital of isreal is. Are you really trying to imply that the Obama administration has no idea about the social and political problems with isreal after 4 years? If that is the question, then the goal of the entire thing is far more sinister as an attempt to provoke a negative reaction which could destabalize the area and situation with isreal further. It is bad enough the right is calling for the republican house to trash the economy over obamacare, but to outright promote a war is just fucking stupid. I was waiting for someone to go down that road and put it flat out that the right deliberately is trying to get the white house to make a comment that is offensive to one side or the other and destroy US relations and provoke war.

Instead of living in a world where everyone that disagrees with you is a nut you might want to check in with reality occasionally.

The White House announced a new agreement with Israel expanding civilian, and military, cooperation. The timing of the announcement was specifically designed to undermine Romney's foreign policy trip and to position Obama as pro Israel.

Since reality actually exists, and in reality, people who attend new briefings at the White House actually pay attention to White house policy announcements, reporters ask specific questions that are related to those announcements.

Your problem is you jumped to a conclusion based on the delusional world you live in where nothing ever happens unless you know about it.

Please do not assume that you know what i do, or that you have the mental capacity to avoid such traps. I have generally found with your type it is best to back you into the corner and then pounce after you admit to the bullshit you are pulling. really, to promote a conflict in the middle east just because you want Obama to make a gaffe is downrigh dangerous, and it is a shitty thing to do.

My type? What type is that? What kind of traps should I think you might catch me in? Could it be something really stupid like posting comments in a thread where I jump to a conclusion without knowing that something else happened that actually prompted someone to do something that is actually quite reasonable? That is so hard for a limited intellect like mine to follow you might actually be able to catch me in it.

Just not today.

All I did was post a video, I didn't trap Obama in anything. I didn't even try because I do not have the access required to do so.

Reality check, even if a conspiracy to make Obama look stupid exists, I am not part of it.

Yes, and he did a good thing by not walking into the right's trap and dismissing the idiots who were trying to stir up violence for their own gain. that is exactly what he is supposed to do. Deflect the question and have obama deal with the world leaders through his position and not through the distortion of the right wing press. He didn't succumb to their taunts that he was ignorant, and he answered their question with the only real answer available for such a short interview. Really, could he have addressed the multitude of concerns and nuances of the issue of isreal with a soundbite? no, and he probably would not be the person to do it either. That answer, if given to the press, should come from Obama.

Stir up violence? How was she trying to stir up violence?

Actually, you are wrong, again. Carney's job is to answer trivial questions like this one so that Obama doesn't have to. This, in your universe, allows him to deal work with leaders of other countries to negotiate the agreement he just announced. In the real world there is an entire department of the Executive Branch that actually negotiates these things. I suggest you Google Hillary Clinton and learn what she is secretary of.

I think you should be aware of my position on the female gender. Wow, that does work well for really assinine comments.

You are the one that called a female reporter a twat. That might not indicate your position on the female gender, but it does indicate your character, which is what I was commenting on.

Actually, I thought the Knesset was located in Tel Aviv. It is in Jerusalem, as you said.

I don't consider financial centers of a nation as that important in terms of the government.

I never knew there was an international problem with their capital till this post, and thats totally why obamas guy wouldnt answer the question. Thanks for the thread, it brought something to my attention that i didnt know. He should have said what side obama was, but they are too scared to be firm. Socialism first, truth last.

the question was improper and impolite and designed to trash obama needlessly. it embarrassed the office of the presidency on what is sure to be an international stage. furthermore, the jewish woman (BBC News America) knew the answer to the question and jay carney correctly stated the answer.

not one single president since truman has recognised al quds/jerusalem as the capital of israel. before truman, it was not a state. the fate of al quds/jerusalem is rightfully relegated to the final status negotiations. israel has consistently refused to negotiate that final status on some pretext or another since what seems like forever. some are fooled. i am not. the reason for such delay is to build more settlements on the west bank and erase any possibility of a viable palestinian state.

now i a going to sat something, and i am sure every single one of you will disagree with me. i imagine you have already. what i have said above is genocide according to the 1948 UN convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide, whose signatories include the USA and israel.

history will record that. i do not want this country, that i served in the u.s. army in the sixties and that my son is serving now in the u.s. navy, to be any way complicit in such atrocities. this is no time to continue playing politics with the lives of israeli and palestinian children at stake.

only two countries around the world recognise al quds/jerusalem as the capital of israel, el salvador and guatamala.

The White House press briefing is not an international stage. Follow up questions to announcements that the US is expanding its ties with Israel seem like a perfectly normal portion of the press briefing, even if the lefties on this forum think otherwise.

obama's official policy is that the capital of Israel is Tel Aviv. That's why Carney wouldn't answer the question. He only said that the regime's position hasn't changed, and it hasn't. obama still denies that the capital of Israel is Jerusalem.

It's a sensitive issue, that Israel could easily defuse by giving the Palestinians E.Jerusalem. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Yep, that will work. This can easily be demonstrated by the fact that every single time Israel has given land, or any other concession, to the Palestinians they responded by throwing huge parties that celebrate their new found friendship with Israel.

As has every other American president. No change.

Only been the capital of Israel for nearly 3000 years.

Is that right?

So Israel wasn't created in 1949 after they invaded Palestine, and terrorized its residents since , 1925 ?!?!?!?!!?

So Israel wasn't created when David Ben-Gurion "donated" 2.5 millions to the Truman presidential campaign?

.

.

No, it wasn't. Ask any archeologist if you don't believe me.

Because ownership of Jerusalem is in dispute, dumbass, and we can't see being a fair broker if we take sides in that dispute.

Eventually, Israel is going to have to give parts of Jerusalem back to the Arabs.

You don't think the US should take sides in a dispute between a group of terrorists and a friendly ally?
