Icelandic girl fights for right to her own name - Yahoo! News

Seriously?? A list of approved names, because government knows what is best?? Yes, it is Iceland and not here... But the more control you give government, the more it will take in such matters. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that even our government would do such a thing here.

You are correct (imho) that too much government intervention is a problem.

But the solution is not "NO government intervention at all."

Balance (imho) is that precious thing that appears so elusive these days. We aren't all going to agree on exactly where the line between too much and too little is drawn - that's a given. That's why it is a moving line.

So win more people over to your way of thinking and you are rewarded by getting to move the line. Insult and alienate people and you don't get a voice in where the line gets drawn.

Principal is great - stupidity isn't.

Damn, isn't that why we have a Constitution? The founders drew the lines in 1787 and subsequent amendments have shifted the lines slightly, that's how it's suposed to be done in the US.

Big Government always has approach of making everything incredibly complicated and incredibly expensive so that wealthy people will pay off politicians for Indulgences.

It's just as corrupt as medieval Catholic Church.

    This line...

"a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment"....

Scares the crap out of me. Local and State governments are already intervening in certain games and activities as they are concerned it may embarrass a child.

    Will names be next?

All I know is when I grew up in the 60's, no one lost an eye playing dodge ball; no one I know was hurt riding a bike without a helmet; and no one refused to go out and play becuase their little league team went winless one season.
