What Makes Socialism So Attractive?

5. In Jung Chang’s autobiographical study of three generations of her family, “Wild Swans,” taking place during the period in which China went from the historical China, to the communist version, we see many of the same changes that are taking place in America today: old restrictions broken down…..with the ‘rebels’ not realizing that their brave new world would come with even more rigid ones.

The women of her family saw the communist’s promise to enforce equality between men and women as their chance to change the lives that had been dealt to them. But…with that came an even more rigid set of ‘party’ restrictions, just in the opposite direction from what had been traditional, but even more punitive: they told her who she could marry, and when, and how.

With, seemingly, good reason….

“The Communists were trying to institute a frugal approach to weddings, which had traditionally been the occasion for huge expenditure, far out of proportion to what people could afford. It was not at all unusual for families to bankrupt themselves to put on a lavish wedding.” Chang, “Wild Swans”

Free choice was still subverted to ‘I know what’s best for you!’
That's the message of every totalitarian regime.

"Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz" ("The community comes before the individual") concretizes the collectivist belief that individuals have no rights and that "the greater good" is the only standard of value. Under such a system, man is not an end to himself, only a tool to be sacrificed for the Führer, autocrat or ruling mob.

Only capitalism regards man as a sovereign individual with an inalienable right to his own life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Government recognition and protection of individual rights is the hallmark of a moral, peaceful, productive society."
Sipsey Street Irregulars: The lie before the crime. "Gemeinnutz geht vor Eigennutz" ("The community comes before the individual")

At least parents wouldn’t kill you for misbehaving.

Here's the thing: Until you have had the experience of working to support yourself and actually seeing how much of your hard-earned money goes out in taxes, you lack the "wisdom" to understand why Socialism is evil. And it is evil. It is theft. Taking money from one group of people who have done nothing wrong, and giving it to others who have done nothing to earn it. That is definitional theft.

A large percentage of Bernie's supporters either have not had that experience, or have had the experience generally, but in a protected environment - government employment, foundation employment, employment in the Arts, and so on.

As I have mentioned repeatedly in this space, if the vote were limited to those who have worked Real Jobs in the Real World, and who have paid at least a nominal amount in FIT for a few years, the entire Democrat party could pack up its tent and leave town, and nobody would even notice.

Oh come on, very little of your income goes out in taxes.
Most people are paying less than 20%.
And the very wealthy only pay capital gains tax.

What you should be upset about the tax system is that the poor are not allowed to write off their rent, food, utilities, transportation, etc., like the wealthy are.

And socialism is NOT taking money from one group and giving it to another.
Socialism is about pooling shared capital for shared infrastructure, like roads, schools, fire fighting, police, etc.

I'd like to see, in their own words, exactly what they think socialism is before I'd render any conclusion.

In this very thread, I'm gonna provide a first hand account of a society that embraced socialism/communism.

That is easy, because obviously the US government it entirely socialist already, and the only thing missing is health care.
Almost all government are always socialist, in that they are not involved in anything for profit.

Do the attendants know you've gotten to the computers again?????

Name a single thing that government does that if for a profit motive, so is not socialist?

What Makes Socialism So Attractive?

FREE Sh!t!

The government takes care of your EVERY need!

It's an utter Utopia - no more need to worry

The problem as the "socialists" see it is income inequality.
Why should Bloomberg have $62b and they are in debt and are working for slave wages?
Why should the US devolve toward a few hundred "oligarch billionaires" and the rest of us "peons"?
We must band together to set things right, we must tax the rich and distribute the income more fairly.
IMHO the Republicans can't keep winning elections, so what happens when the democrats eventually win?

Certainly, what you say is true, and the most commonly attributed of socialism...

Dennis Prager has written
  1. The Left has been far more interested in fighting material inequality than tyranny, which is why Lenin, Mao, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, Castro, etc., tend to have the support of Leftists around the world.
  2. The Left is less interested in creating wealth than in distributing it.

But there is more....there is need to claim that they are different from others who may be able to point to more accomplishments.

No leftist has ever supported Lenin, Stalin, Mao, or Pol Pot, who were capitalists and killed off any socialist they could.
Ho Chi Minh and Castro are more of a mixture and not easily categorized.

All wealth actually is created by labor at the bottom.
The ones at the top simply can control what the laborers at the bottom get paid from the work they do, and do no production themselves, at all.

I must admit, you manage to make each post more stupid, more absurd, than the last.

So, you’re running for the job of President of the idiocracy???? Ya’ got my vote.

Because our capitalism is broken. Workers have few rights. We have many near monopolies, wage collusion, non compete agreements... the government is bought by corporations, look at all the money in politics...

There is no point in leaving a broken capitalist state because it will take over and destroy all other states.
It has to be fixed from within.

Because our capitalism is broken. Workers have few rights. We have many near monopolies, wage collusion, non compete agreements... the government is bought by corporations, look at all the money in politics...

more horseshit. We have near monopolies BECAUSE of government regulations, Why can Walmart destroy every small business in a town when they build a store? Because small businesses are hamstrung with regulations and taxes the huge businesses can bury with profits.

What we need is a truly free market place, not one controlled from DC.

As to wages, you lefties bitch about Walmart wages but you praise the system that allows them to get away with paying low wages..

you bitch about corporations buying politicians but praise the politicians who are bought.

Republicans are bad examples of working if this guy in the white house is any example. He's been mostly goofing off playing golf and tweeting for three years. Anyway, any links to prove that republicans work harder than democrats?

People are attracted to socialism because they want somebody else to take care of them. In the case of the young in particular, they have always had their parents do that, and since these same parents did not prepare them to be an adult, they simply look to government for their nurturing.

Food is shared? No. Except for the very young, the very old and the feeble those that do not hunt do not eat. Eventually those who intend to share in the success of others are expelled from the tribe to live alone.

We have fought communists for years. It is time to wipe them out.

and do no production themselves, at all.
I agree with that. However, the wealthy risk their capital to finance the means of production.

This isn't a cut and dried situation we operate under- capitalism, properly regulated, will cure the ills of inequality, perceived or real. Crony capitalism with a top down (gov't) intentionally misregulated system of borrow to spend enslaves all who participate. Degree of enslavement is the difference. The less you earn the more you're enslaved. The more gov't regulation the more obstacles that have to be circumvented which requires more money- the ones with less have to borrow to succeed- once they succeed, if they do, they become the villain to be demonized by the lesser than proponents-
