What is the use of sanctions on Russia ?!

You know that since March Barack Obama started to attach sanctions against Russian economy . But what does termination of investment and military cooperation with Russia mean? There is no doubt that Russia is powerful, rich with resources and the biggest in the world country. It is the biggest supplier, which provides world with natural resources. Of course American government hopes to cause a quarrel between Europe and Russia, because we need to have marketing outlets too. It's not a bad strategy.. But keeping in mind the constant increasing national debt, I really afraid of the most devastating crisis. When the world see developing of our economy, they immediately will ask us to pay back. But will we have such a huge sum of money in case when lots of economical projects have failed? I men those economical projects of great importance that we were working out with Russia... Space programs for example...
