Saving faith is defined in Hebrews 11:1 (ESV):

"Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."

assurance = ὑπόστασις (hypostasis) = confidence, trust, being sure (an assured impression, a mental realizing)
conviction = ἔλεγχος (elenchos) = certainty, proof (a trial in order to proof, a proof)

Faith is explained by using hypostasis and elenchos as synonyms, which gives additional clarity to the explaination. Assurance, being sure, certainty, is only possible because there is proof.

Without proof, assurance is impossible.
