What if SS marriage was called something else?

With people in such an uproar over people of the same sex being married what if it was called something else? Would people still be just as outraged? Same rights as a married couple, just called by a different name.

I know it can be likened to the days of separate but equal. I'm just curious.

It's about more than a name.

I certainly don't have any problem with people living together and making contractual engagements in this regard. But that is something else (in name and in substance) than a marriage.
