If their job description says they will run 20 miles in 100 degree weather, then they either run, quite, or get fired.

In MY position there are two folks above me and dozens below so while I don't think it is the way things should be, it is GREAT news in the micro sense.

Most companies are mini-USSR's. You play by the rules of the government or you get sent to the gulags. You are not free to do or say everything you can on the outside of the building.

They can also reach outside the building, with clauses dealing with behavior detrimental to the company, and non-disclosure agreements.

Yeah, as they should. Friends daughter was Snow White for a few years. She didn't have much of a night life then.

To the title question, Nothing. They can comply with the requirement of the job/boss/you, or they can leave to find work elsewhere. Likewise, you can fire/punish them for non-compliance. Beyond that, you can do nothing. You can "make them" do something no more than I can "make you" do something. All any of us can do is make things more uncomfortable, one way or another, within the confines of our own power/control.

It's not what they call you. It's what you answer to.
    -- W.C. Fields

The short answer, for everyone, is nothing one is not willing to allow them to do.

Choices have consequences, but that doesn't mean one must do that which one finds unacceptable to do.

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then He shall reward every man according to his works.
    -- Matthew 16:26-27

    Keith Olbermann on Twitter

How many people were inconvenienced by traveling to Indianapolis for 10 minutes? And half of that $250,000 was probably just for parking Air Force 2 near the stadium. How much easier would it have been to stay home and protest the game in front of his television?
