That comparison would be valid if you're in a position to influence public policy on par with holding the office of the Presidency of the United States.

Presumably you're not so it doesn't really matter what you or anyone else calls you. In Obama's case it does matter, as it has implications for the policies he pursues. And since he's now been in office for several years and hasn't advocated or pursued socialism or related policies, it makes little sense to claim he's a super-secret socialist in private who won't pursue socialism in his public life.
