Seattle teachers to strike on 1st day of school Wednesday

Sep. 8, 2015 9:34 PM EDT

SEATTLE (AP) — Teachers in Seattle will walk picket lines Wednesday after last-minute negotiations over wages and other issues failed to avert a strike in Washington state's largest school district.

Members of the Seattle Education Association, which represents about 5,000 teachers, substitutes and support staff, had previously authorized a walkout. School was set to begin Wednesday for 53,000 in Seattle Public Schools — Washington's largest school district.

Both sides remained far apart on several key issues, including pay raises, teacher evaluations and the length of the school day. The union has asked for an 18 percent raise over three years, in addition to a state-approved 3 percent cost-of-living increase. The district's latest wage proposal offers nearly 9 percent over three years.

Seattle parents were scrambling to come up with options ahead of the decision. The city parks department was expanding before- and after-school care programs into all-day offerings because of the strike, and some community centers were also opening their doors.

Seattle isn't the only district facing a teacher labor action. Teachers in Pasco in southeast Washington have voted not to return to the classroom despite a court order to end a strike. In Pasco, teachers decided Monday night to remain on strike, idling 17,000 students on Tuesday in a dispute over pay and curriculum.

The Obama White House has overseen a “horror show” of lawlessness, the union charged, with cops as the intended victims. The association’s president Jerry Flynn gave a statement to the Boston Herald about its reasoning for the boycott. Our members are enraged at his lack...

Thousands Of Seattle Teachers Strike Over Pay, Class Size

Educators in nearly 60 districts statewide have held or approved one-day walkouts, accusing lawmakers in Olympia of failing to meet a state Supreme Court mandate to fund public schools fully.

Teachers are also unhappy about a proposal to raise pay by 3 percent over two years, while the state has not increased teacher healthcare funding in five years, according to the Washington Education Association.

They want to ensure the upcoming budget meets a voter mandate to lower class sizes as well, the union said.

Washington averages 23.7 students in elementary classrooms, more than the national average of 21.2, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The Washington legislature is under a state Supreme Court order to increase funding for public schools by 2019. The current budget being considered is $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion.

The state’s legislature hasn’t given teachers a cost-of-living raise in six years, according to SEA. Lawmakers approved a 3 percent raise this year, followed by a 1.8 percent raise the following year, according to local station KIRO TV.

The union had asked for a 6 percent pay raise every year for three years, in addition to the 3 percent cost of living increase, SEA said in a bargaining update on its website Tuesday.

SEA said that the district’s wage proposal barely budged from previous offers, and that staff would work 30 minutes longer each day without additional compensation, the update added.

Unions =

1) Fight for workers rights.

2) Have a safer work environment through job training.

3) Fight for workers benefits and pay.

4) Have better trained workers than non-union workers.

5) Provide a better work environment for their workers than non-union work locations.

6) Are very employee oriented.
