Walter Cronkite -- Dead at 92

Good riddance.

If you want to know why "Journalism" is so fucked up to the extent that it no longer exists, blame Kronkite and his call against our men and women fighting in Vietnam.

After that every reporter wanted to make his bones by altering history like that douchebag Dan Rather.

Fuck him.

I am sure statists and collectivists like you WOULD hate Cronkite...he departed from the State's propaganda...

FUCK HIM!

We had the NVA by the fucking short hairs after TET!

They were crushed and defeated and had the USA ever lost a Post WWII battle like that, it would be the #1 Librul talking point until the Sun becomes a brown dwarf.

Speaking of dwarfs, fuck Cronkite.

You sound a lot like John Kerry who testified that after we fled Vietnam in disgrace the Communists would kill maybe "5,000 tops" Oopsies! Off by 2 million!

Once again, Fuck Cronkite and the entire LMSM who even after we won a crushing Victory at TET called the war for the North.

Libs, siding with the bad guys since WWII

Once again, Fuck Cronkite

Cronkite’s editorial on the Vietnam War, February 1968.

"We have been too often disappointed by the optimism of the American leaders, both in Vietnam and Washington, to have faith any longer in the silver linings they find in the darkest clouds. ...

"It seems now more certain than ever that the bloody experience of Vietnam is to end in a stalemate. This summer’s almost certain standoff will either end in real give-and-take negotiations or terrible escalation. And for every means we have to escalate, the enemy can match us, and that applies to invasion of the north, the use of nuclear weapons, or the mere commitment of 100 or 200 or 300,000 more American troops to the battle. And with each escalation, the world comes closer to cosmic disaster.

"To say that we are closer to victory today is to believe, in the face of the evidence, the optimists who have been wrong in the past. To suggest we are on the edge of defeat is to yield to unreasonable pessimism. To say that we are mired in stalemate seems the only realistic, yet unsatisfactory, conclusion. ... It is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out, then, will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy and did they best they could."

please show me the part where he disrespects u.s. servicemen and women, krusader.

thanks

After the US military won one of the most decisive victories in the entire history of warfare, on par with, say if we were able to sink half the Japanese Fleet on Dec 7, 1941

“we have been too often disappointed by the optimism of the American leaders … to have faith any longer in the silver linings they find in the darkest clouds.” --Walter "Ho Chi Min" Cronkite

Once again, Fuck Walter Ho Chi Min Cronkite.

If Dante were still proscribing people to the Inferno, Cronkite would be blowing Ho Chi Min for all eternity in the afterlife, just like he did when he was alive.

I was 12 when Tet raged and one of my classmates lost an older brother, a Marine, in the battle. It devastated us and we grieved with him.

Only much, much later would I learn how fucking sinister and devious the LMSM had become in in calling the war for the North and I can't say it enough: Fuck Cronkite.

Ironic...Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld learned NOTHING from all the knowledge gained from Vietnam...

You're an idiot CF... and the UN American POS... you'd sacrifice the lives of hundreds of thousands of American sons & daughters in a civil war that could not be won militarily. We were totally out maneuvered in the political and psychological fronts and we had no understanding of who we were fighting...even General Maxwell Taylor, one of the biggest war mongers on the planet noted "first, we didn't know ourselves. We thought that we were going into another Korean war, but this was a different country. Secondly, we didn't know our South Vietnamese allies... And we knew less about North Vietnam. Who was Ho Chi Minh? Nobody really knew. So, until we know the enemy and know our allies and know ourselves, we'd better keep out of this kind of dirty business. It's very dangerous."

First, we won Tet

Second, drop fucking dead.

Cronkite's greatness was that he was an honorable man...

No, he was not. If he'd an honorable man he wouldn't have said what he said after the Tet offensive. He totally blew it on that one. He took advantage of his position of trust to create a totally false impression and give aid and comfort to the North Vietnamese. He and other members of the media basically performed as lackeys of an enemy of the United States.

Would you prefer he peddled propaganda for the government of the day?

What he did was peddle propaganda for the North Vietnamese government. The North Vietnamese were prepared to give up after the resounding defeat they'd suffered in that campaign. But when they saw how the US media responded, and Conkrite was part of that, they realized that they could exploit that. What he did was take a situation in which the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong had just taken a butt-kicking and contribute to turning it into a perception on the part of the American people that the War was not "winnable." He had absolutely no clue.

On the other hand he may have realised what many in the military and government realised at about that time, that the North Vietnamese were ready for a war of attrition that couldn't be won by South Vietnam or by the allied forces.

No. The point is that the North Vietnamese were ready to give up after the Tet Offensive before they saw how the American News media reacted. What they saw is that, while they could not win militarily, they could win psychologically because of the way the American media were reacting. And Conrkrite was a huge part of that. He was pretty darned close to being a traitor.

we were never going to win in viet nam because the politicians wouldn't get out of the way.

The North Vietnamese were extremely demoralized by the outcome of the Tet Offensive. What Cronkite and others in the media did was give them a route to victory. Seriously, had our media not responded in that way, it's quite possible that the outcome of the Tet Offensive would've been North Vietnam deciding to quit pursuing the war. I agree that US politicians wouldn't get out of the way. But our media played a key role in the North Vietnamese strategy. And Walter Cronkite's statement about "stalemate" after the Tet Offensive was a big part of that. It was not a stalemate at the point. At that point the North Vietnamese had just given it their best shot, marshalled everything they had, and been crushed.

The North Vietnamese may have been ready to stop hostilities at that point but I seriously doubt if they were going to ever give up. Bit moot though isn't it?

Great way to run a military: taking advise from guys who are paid to read notes every night.

I can only imagine how WWII would have turned out if Cronkite was broadcasting after we got our asses kicked at Kasserine Pass in our first time up against the Germans.

fool.

"In Kansas City, he joined the United Press in 1937.[3] He became one of the top American reporters in World War II, covering battles in North Africa and Europe.[7] He was one of eight journalists selected by the United States Army Air Forces to fly bombing raids over Germany in a B-17 Flying Fortress.[12] He also landed in a glider with the 101st Airborne in Operation Market-Garden and covered the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he covered the Nuremberg trials and served as the United Press main reporter in Moscow for two years."

LBJ, to my knowledge, was never paid to read notes every night. you'd benefit from reading some history.
