Virginia women protest "state mandated rape"

wrong. Look in the thread for the linked HR bill. No specification of the type of ultrasound is made. You're either stupid, or a liar. Which is it?

Here's the language:

"Except in the case of a medical emergency, at least 24 hours before the performance of an abortion a qualified medical professional trained in sonography and working under the direct supervision of a physician licensed in the Commonwealth shall perform fetal ultrasound imaging and auscultation of fetal heart tone services on the patient undergoing the abortion for the purpose of determining gestational age."

Ok, so we've established that women will be required to have an ultrasound. The language of the law doesn't specify transvaginal ultrasounds be performed; however, transvaginal ultrasounds are the primary ultrasound method used for pregnancies under 12 weeks gestation.

Abdominal Ultrasound: Vaginal Ultrasound, Types of Ultrasound
The vaginal or "trans-vaginal" ultrasound is performed by placing a sterilized ultrasound probe inside the vagina. This method is often used during fertility treatment or early pregnancy (less than 12 weeks) as it enables the ultrasonographer to look more closely at the woman's uterus. Vaginal ultrasounds may also be more beneficial if the woman has a retroverted or 'tipped' uterus (up till 12 weeks of pregnancy) or if the ultrasonographer needs to view the woman's cervix or detect a low-lying placenta.

Since VA's law requires that women seeking an abortion will have no choice but to have an ultrasound, and the majority of abortions are performed on pregnancies under 12 weeks gestation, then under VA's law, women who are under 12 weeks gestation and who choose to have an abortion will most likely have to get a transvaginal ultrasound.

Facts on Induced Abortion in the United States

When women have abortions
Eighty-eight percent of abortions occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, 2006.

How does this law prevent a woman from getting an abortion?

It doesn't. It informs the doctor of the gestational age of the fetus and it informs the woman that yes, Virginia, there really is a living, human, heart beating life in there. Nothing AT ALL is stopping her from choosing to end it if that is what she wants.

When an abortion is performed, don't they use an ultra sound to see what they're doing and to be sure that they've gotten every bit of the fetus out? (serious question)

Republicans have become right wing extremists.

Their War on Women's Health Care has gone too far.

American women will remember in November who stood up for them....the Democratic Party.

Such liars the press are.

And such suckers so many of the readers are.

And, the women protesting this are idiots and sellouts.

"Except in the case of a medical emergency, at least 24 hours before the performance of an
abortion a qualified medical professional trained in sonography and working under the direct
supervision of a physician licensed in the Commonwealth shall perform fetal ultrasound imaging and
auscultation of fetal heart tone services on the patient undergoing the abortion for the purpose of
determining gestational age."

What horror!

Determining gestational age has nothing to do with it. Laying on additional guilt in the hopes of chasing her away is the sole purpose of the bill

Just like your health care bill.

The phrase how do you like me now comes to mind.

You are going to have to explain how that is like the healthcare bill. Try as I might, I can't figure what the fuck you are talking about

You mentioned guilt trip...

Welcome aboard.

Yes or no, the bill mandates an ultrasound be performed prior to the abortion.
And with or without the bill, there is no physician who will do an abortion without an ultrasound. So, your gripe is what?

So this law is about what?
Ensuring that no state funds are spent on elective abortions and ensuring that there are no elective abortions done after a gestational age of 12 weeks (the latter is what the majority of other states require as well).

Thanks for proving my point.

That being an educated and informed patient is a bad thing? Your point isn't very pointy.

That equating ultrasounds to education is a bogus argument; that your attempt at linking the insurance mandate with VA's ultrasound mandate is desperate and dishonest; that you like big gov't telling you what to do.

No, it isn't. It informs the doctor of the gestational age of the fetus and it informs the patient of exactly what is in there. Why do you object to the patient being an informed one?

Mandate is mandate. One helps inform both doctor and patient, the other leaves a human no choice but to purchase or been fined. Do they jail you if you don't pay the fine?

I like doctors and patients being informed. Why don't doctors do the ultrasound on their own? Then there wouldn't be no stinking mandate . . well, at least not for the ultrasound.

I realize this is a subject that you guys have a hard time understanding; but it's really very simple. When a woman chooses to get an abortion; that is her choice. Under this law, a woman seeking an abortion will have no choice but to let a doctor stick a probe up her vagina. It's about the freedom to choose; to not have the gov't mandate what you can do with your own body.

That was, quite possibly, the most thought out and well argued post you have ever made on this board. Still, it doesn't change the fact that the bill doesn't specify transvaginal ultrasounds be performed. That is decided by the physician and the patient, based on the individual circumstances.

Republicans are for small government.

Small enough to fit in a women's uterus.

Rent a mob has been tricked. If the state is supposed to pay for poor women's abortions isn't that state mandated rape and state mandated destruction of a fetus?

If a woman wants to end her pregnancy, the taxpayers should not carry that burden.

Absolutely.

They don't......it's the law

True. The federal government doesn't. But, without this bill, the Virginian taxpayers could be burdened with funding elective abortions for Virginian women.

Thanks for caring.

so when Obamacare mandates men get a finger shoved up their ass for a prostate check, are they going to call that rape too..

Finger up the ass could very well save their worthless lives. Forcing women to a ultra sound is violation of their civil rights. Republicans don't want governemnt to control our lives they want to themselves. IF you think Obama's mandates are taking over control of our lives just wait until we get Santorum. Religious fanatic dictator.
Birth control pills, prenatal testing save lives of babies and mothers. Many birth defects can be corrected in the womb. women and girls take birth control pill to control heavy month bleeding. Santorum want to control population by letting people die.
