Soviet style communism and America style capitalism are but divergent paths to the same ultimate destination, wherein all wealth, power, and all reasonable societal access to either are eventually concentrated into the hands of a tyrannical few.

Maybe it's a matter that neither starts with that goal in mind, but human beings having the greed gene, a tyrannical few eventually manage to grab all the wealth and power. Then, eventually, they fail for some reason or other and it will eventually happen again. Our goal is to keep the greed gene in check, which necessitates a representative government, and we are sunk when we lose our power to stop it.

Socialism is all about greed... It breeds absolute control freaks.

Socialists have been trying to separate human nature from socialism without success for over a century now, and they don't learn their lessons. They keep thinking THIS time will be different, and it never is.

I think we are arguing different terms. When I think of socialism, I think of what we already have in this country as far as Social Security, housing assistance, food stamps, potentially universal healthcare. I don't think of a dictatorship and I don't see one about to happen. People loosely sling terms about Obama and the left, saying its a dictatorship, but anyone who has actually experienced a dictatorship or soviet Russia would laugh in their faces. While I don't really think our government is very good at administering the programs it's already got, and I worry about them taking on even more, I don't worry about it being a dictatorship, just a typical cluster f**k caused by a numb bureaucracy.

That and a transfer of what little power and wealth the common folk had over to monied, lobbied up coroporate power.

Humans are too greedy for this bullshit to work. The central government gets wayyy too much power. Look at history. Socialism IS the problem.

I agree with you about the greedy part. What I have trouble with is, why socialism as an economic system can't seem to be separated from authoritarian rule or dictatorship in people's minds. Marx knew he was writing about a 'perfect' utopian society, but I don't think we need to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The concept of 'sharing the wealth' or even part of the wealth doesn't have to mean ultimate communism unless we choose to make it that way.

This is a perfect opportunity for those who want or agree with Socialism.

Venezuela, is in dire straits. May I suggest those who want utopian socialism move to Venezuela and create this utopia and after it succeeds we can continue this discussion.
