The world is waiting to see how much of the new US President’s rhetoric will be turned into action. There is concern in Catholic social justice circles about his stance on immigration, health care and climate change. Here, Tablet writers consider the prospects for the American economy, relations with Russia, and Donald Trump’s pledge to tighten the abortion laws. Firstly, how is the Church squaring up to the challenges ahead?

Dunno, has the Pope continued to say that people who build walls go to hell?

The American Catholic Church has always found itself in a quandry since we became divided. On second thought, they always found themselves in a quandry before we became divided.

Yep, those that build walls to keep people out are EVIL.

America won't be divided long.

Butthurt is now proven to be a terminal disease for which there is no cure and none being sought.

Liberals will be extinct within four years.

Are you kidding.

Roaches will be the last living organisms on earth to survive the coming carnage.

What Catholic social justice circles would that be exactly?

Catholic social justice helps the poor all over the world, regardless of borders. Catholics do not need to break immigration laws to be socially just. We have poor and sick within our own borders who are also in need. Being a global faith, we are also very good about helping those beyond our borders. We have also been taught of being good stewards of the planet.

We don't need politicians manipulating Catholics by pouncing on a way to use them for their own purposes.

Except it's the other way around, Catholics pouncing on politicians for their purposes.
Catholics are a diverse population. As such they cross the political spectrum. Faith informs values and values inform our choices. They are inseparable sisters. The three go together. To argue that Catholics forfeit their rights to participate as a citizen in their shared society just because they believe in God and are members of the Catholic faith is ludicrous.

The pope running his socialist yap for starters. Keep it in the church.

Anyone else you would like to silence? Remember, the Pope is allowed his personal opinions. Some Catholics agree with these opinions; others do not. Either way, they are worth consideration.

The Church likes it's immigrants(legal and illegal) from the south of the border...

You asked a question and I gave you an answer. The pope has a right to rub his socialist yap, didn't say he didn't but you asked how the church was trying to influence politicians. You do not get to dictate answers.
