US aircraft carriers in worst shape in decades

Analysis of deployment data for the past 50 years show that the US Navy currently has fewer carriers than ever, the United States Naval Institute (USNI) reported Wednesday. Only 15 percent of them were committed to operational deployments this year, compared to a 28 percent average for the rest of the era of the War on Terror. For 22 days this summer the Navy did not have a single aircraft carrier group underway anywhere in the world – the longest such gap in the entire 50 years studied.

The report says the Navy faces a significant challenge, as it needs to return its aircraft carrier force into good shape while preserving their global presence at a level that would not compromise US military dominance.

Such vessels are outdated. Huge, expensive targets are a thing of the past. They are to the present world stage what battleships were in WWII.
Many and cheap is the strategy today. Few, big and costly is an albatross.

Considering the distance between the US and every other nation in carrier strength, I don't think this is a huge issue.

Japan and France each have 4 carriers. Italy, Australia, India and Egypt each have 2 carriers. Russia, China, UK, Spain, South Korea and Brazil each have 1 carrier.

That is a total of 22 carriers, worldwide, that are not under the US flag. The US has 20 carriers.

also, it does not state the reasons for each carrier
....''underway''????!!!!!?? what does this mean??..I was at sea in USMC amphibs in Europe for 6 months and South America for 2 --6 month each-- deployments..we spent a lot of time in port
....it takes time for new air groups-etc to redeploy/fuel/load/etc

due to layoffs and retirements during the previous years.

it's not Obama's fault if they are aging
but if he reduced spending on them, yes
we need to cut back on building new carriers
we are in huge debt--that will kill us before any war will

You missed the point, right winger. Tax cut economics are not merely worthless if they don't cover spending, they can be dangerous to operations and safety. We should require, wartime tax rates for real times of war.

The waste, fraud, duplication, orders for weapons systems that nobody wants, and outright graft can be wrung out of the Pentagon budget, and there'd be plenty of money there to maintain the military....The Pentagon is absolutely no different from any other wasteful and inefficient bureaucracy in the snarled panoply of the federal bureaucracy.
