Ocean covers nearly three-quarters of the Earth's surface and within its depths lie an array of precious treasures. Over the years, many of these amazing treasures were discovered by accident. Here are some of the world's most valuable ancient treasures found underwater.

Ship of Gold
SS Central America, known as the Ship of Gold, was a sidewheel steamer that operated between Central America and the eastern coast of the United States during the 1850s. The ship sank in a hurricane in September 1857 along with 14,000 kg of gold. There it remained until it was discovered in the 1980s . The total value of the recovered gold was estimated at $150 million. A recovered gold ingot weighing 36 kg sold for a record $8 million and was recognized as the most valuable piece of currency in the world at that time.

Flor Do Mar
Flor Do Mar was built in Lisbon in 1502, being one of the finest vessels of the time. This ship was carrying a great amount of treasure when it sank somewhere off the coast of Sumatra in November 1511. Other statues and a throne of pure gold are also believe to be among the sunken treasure as well as countless amounts of gold, silver and gemstones. The worth of the treasure has been estimated to be around 3 billion dollars. Although some claim to have found the ship but there is no irrefutable evidence to support it.

I always loved this stuff! They used to sell sunken gold ship maps in Key West. Some guy went around and found quite a few.

You may be referring to Mel Fisher, the great treasure hunter. He found the Atocha and salvaged the huge amount of gold and silver it carried. It sank in a hurricane not far from Key West.

Oh, we used to get into it..research the old shipping lanes and when they disappeared and things like that. I think somebody got the one that sank just out the mouth of a river in NE FL. Not too long ago, either.
It was full of gold. Gold was the main cargo.
