The Democrats used to be seriously against illegal immigration as this video of Bill Clinton demonstrates.

All Trump really needs to do is get one of his fanciers to buy a bunch of advertising playing old Democrats attacking illegal immigration and then ask what has changed? Have our policies on immigration improved, or have Democrats learned how to exploit them more?

He has to relate to the lower to lower middle class and explain how the current immigration system is impacting them most, including those legal immigrants and minorities. This wouldn't be the case if it were a merit based system by the way. We have a few unskilled immigrants, but by and large, Canada takes educated, skilled citizens, or, those in the investment class in which they directly invest in Canada.

Unfortunately we do have a similar chain migration system within the investment class for sure, but not to the extend you guys have, up to 25 people is insane.

America is the greatest nation in the world, so why sell it out so short and treat it like a flophouse? Educated, skilled, motivated, supporters of American Values should all be requisites if I were designing an immigration system.

All of Trump's policies seem to be a love poem to the Dem party of yore

Why because the 80's saw the influx of the most illegal immigrants, yes under Reagan and he gave amnesty to most of them.
Ronald Reagan on Immigration
Reagan himself was a dreamer, capable of imagining a world without trade barriers. In announcing his presidential candidacy in Nov. 1979, he had proposed a “North American accord” in which commerce & people would move freely across the borders of Canada & Mexico. This idea, largely overlooked or dismissed as a campaign gimmick in the US, rankled nationalist sensibilities in the neighboring nations. But Reagan was serious in his proposal. Though he traveled only once outside the North American continent during his first 57 years, he was neither insular nor isolationist. California has windows to the world in Asia, and Reagan thought of the US as a Pacific power as well as an Atlantic one. He also had a Californian’s consciousness of Mexico and an actor’s appreciation of Canadians, who are well-represented in the film community. The dream of a North American accord would drive the successful pursuit of a US-Canadian free trade agreement and a future-oriented “framework” trade agreement with Mexico
