Trump says president 'can't have a conflict of interest,' suggests he could continue to run company

esident-elect Donald Trump shrugged off rising concerns Tuesday about the potential conflicts-of-interest between his ongoing participation in the Trump Organization and his future as president, saying the president "can't have a conflict of interest" and that the law is "totally" on his side.

Conflit of Interest is for the "little people".

A man with a 19 point credit rating, who lost a billion in a single year, and has had 6 bankruptcies, just received a "cease and desist" order for running an illegal and unlicensed foundation do something involving a "conflict of interest"?

I predict that Trump's presidency is going to be an erratic mess. If that's even half true, Americans are going to tire of Trump in very short order. Watch his poll numbers sink as a result. Unfortunately, because Trump lacks Obama's cool nature, instead of toughing it out silently, Trump will almost certainly respond by lashing out at virtually anyone and everyone. People are going to be sick of having a president who acts like a spoiled child.

Then it's going to get ugly. At that point, I wouldn't be surprised if Republican elected representatives begin to meet in secret to try to figure out a way to save both the country (and their own political party, of course) from this electoral college disaster.

I predict practically all republicans will give him everything he wants and not even feel like hypocrites. At this point I cannot imagine a fuckup big enough to make the bulk of his followers and allies turn on him. If any of them had the country as their primary moral obligation he would never have been elected.

If the econ doesn't take off, the media will eviscerate him. The good news for him is that we do seem to have some general uptick. But rates will go up, and there's nothing to push up incomes.

Politics is a strange game. If you don't believe it, look at the change of attitude in Republicans after Trump won. They didn't much like him at all before, but winning the election has a way of making those differences seem slight. But that doesn't mean it's going to stay that way, and it doesn't mean that they'll follow him everywhere. Keep in mind that they KNOW Trump is not a conservative. Consequently, they have good reason to worry that their agenda is at risk. So, they'll support him...for now. But in politics, there is no such thing as friends. They could turn on him if they see him as more of a liability than an asset, but it will take a series of problems to force their hand. If his presidency turns out to be as much, if not more of, a mess as his candidacy was, and chaos reigns supreme, they would be happy as clams to have Pence take over as president.

You are giving them credit for having far more rationality and devotion to their ideology than they actually possess.

How is it a conflict of interest for a President to have a business or assets? He can't do much unilaterally to change laws or regulations, that would have to be approved by Congress.

To start with, foreign dignitaries are staying at his Washington hotel giving him thousands of dollars every day.

His company wants a sweetheart deal on resort land in a foreign country. He calls the Prime Minister and Bob's your uncle, deal is set. That's how a conflict of interest is possible.

Every President in modern history has become a moderate when taken office. Trump, and (IF) Pence will be no exceptions.

He shouldn't HAVE a hotel where foreigners can curry favour with him by renting the $20,000 a night suite.

He shouldn't be using the OVAL OFFICE to promote his businesses.

Just like Dick Cheney should have sold his shares of Haliburton before he became Vice-President and gave all of those untendered government contracts to Haliburton.

I'm guessing you think you are being satirical.

Trump has business dealings all over the world. Running them and running America? You really can't see why there would be a conflict of interest?

Then there is the nepotism law. Put in place because JFK made his brother Attorney General.
Republicans thinking they are doing something to "get" Democrats and they got themselves.

You know what else is funny? The GOP changed the law so a sitting president would have to go to court in a civil trial. They didn't used to have to. The GOP did it hoping they could "get" Bill Clinton. And that's why Trump had to pay 25 million. Before, he could have "sat out" the trial during his term, but it was better he settled than going to court. If he got caught lying, well, you know.
