The United States is prevented by its Constitution from guaranteeing cradle-to-grave healthcare, as they do in, for example, Canada. The Tenth Amendment prohibits the Federal government from (basically) doing anything other than the 17 things set out in Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution.

This is the Tenth Amendment: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

The Tenth Amendment is an anachronism. Much of not most of the economic and environmental legislation passed by the United States Congress is in violation of the Tenth Amendment. This legislation was passed because it was popular with the voters. This is particularly true of Social Security and Medicare.

If the United States Supreme Court began to take the Tenth Amendment seriously, it would be quickly repealed. Supreme Court justices who voted on its basis would be impeached, and replaced. All of this would happen very quickly.

The governments that existed under Stalin and Mao demonstrate that a dictatorship is an unacceptable government for a socialist economy. They do not discredit socialism.

When it comes to economic systems, there are many variations between the laissez faire capitalism the United States had during the nineteenth century and what existed under Stalin and Mao.

The closest approximation to democratic socialism that actually exists is Scandinavian Social Democracy. That is what I prefer to what exists in the United States.

When people advocate "freedom" I want to know: freedom for who? and what will they do with their freedom? More freedom for employers means more power for employers, and consequently less freedom for employees.

By not showing up to vote, 60% of mostly poor and middle class Americans said they don't care. They don't care if their country has affordable healthcare or if the government raises their taxes so that the rich can have tax breaks. By not showing up we showed them that unions that protect the middle class are all but dead. DONE. Toast. So will social security and medicare and any other social safety nets or social services that any normal or good country would provide its citizens. Forget public schools. If you live in a rich neighborhood you'll have a good school and if not, expect the bare minimum. Cuts cuts cuts.
