Lieberman and the Gonzales Vote [Byron York]

As expected, Senate Republicans stopped the resolution expressing no confidence in Alberto Gonzales. The vote was 53-38, meaning Democrats could not cut off debate and move toward a vote on the resolution. Republican Sens. Collins, Coleman, Hagel, Specter, Smith, and Sununu voted with Democrats. Perhaps more interesting is the fact that Joseph Lieberman voted with Republicans, which might be interpreted as a further move toward the GOP. It's one thing to stick with the president on Iraq and advocate a tough policy toward Iran, but siding with most Republicans on Gonzales? Interesting.

Why is that interesting? Lieberman's been a republican for the last six years -- except in formal party affiliation.

Really? What is his liberal/conservative score? Other than the war, what do you disagree with him on?

LIEberman has infinitely more clout as an independent that he would as a turncoat member of the republican party. Iraq is a bucket of shit. It is not going to get any better between now and 08.... if the republicans were to regain the majority in the senate, the only practical benefit it gives them is supreme court nominees...and you can bet your bottom dollar that if Joe swings to the dark side, any moderate/liberal jurist will stay where he or she is until after '08 so that benefit is moot. In 08, the republicans will lose more seats. When they do, Joe will be just another relatively powerless member of the minority.
