Yes I've heard the story about the car and the hill...did you hear that on the drudge report or something? It's told at least once a month on this forum. I find it hard to believe in 1980 all the engineers were swearing that's the best it gets when there was already better designs over here anyway. But whatever, not really related.

There is already a fantastic case of showing private education failing hard....it's called Corinthian College. It was a private higher ed college chain with multiple campuses and tens of thousands of students. It was 100% privately owned and what actually ended up happening is they put advertisements and marketing above the student's education for years so the students actually got a sub-par education. This went on for a period of DECADES before they finally were brought to court and taken down by the education department.

The same thing would happen with private school systems with vouchers...as soon as you attach a profit incentive to something like educating children the profit motives come first and the children's actual education comes second (if that...).

Vouchers are not the instant success you think they are, they have lots of downsides, another being that they would potentially force people's tax money to fund Christian private schools and basically fund religious education. This already happens in some states.
