Common Defense. Seems to cover it rather well.
Common offense is more like it. The US offends the Muslims and its citizens.

If the "pantie bomber" had gone though one of those machines, he most certainly would have been stopped.
Oh?
Are planned airport scanners just a scam? - Home News, UK - The Independent
If they are so "ineffective", then why are Republicans so deathly afraid of them?
Looks to me like folks really need to decide whether to criticize the Obama administration for allowing the underwear bomber to get through, or whether to criticize him for being to thorough in examining passengers.
You're all scared to death of terrorists, but refuse to do what is necessary to stop them, because God forbid someone might see how tiny your penises are.

How is Obama to blame for the underwear bomber?

Or there is the third element, those of us who are adults. Freudian slip on your part?
Considering that the 9/11/2001 attackers had that "Muslim" thing in common, I couldn't really give a rat's ass if "Muslims" allegedly take offense.
It is permissible to take note of such things.
It's kinda like a pattern recognition.
Get enough Islamoshitfuckers to try to kill the infidels and pretty soon infidels are going to end up being suspicious of adherents of Islam.
Dennis Miller said it pretty damn well: "The fact that the 9-11 terrorists came from the same region isn’t profiling, it’s called being minimally observant.”

Hey, you know what would REALLY piss Muslims off? People looking at their privates. Not to mention their wive's privates and their daughter's privates.
Why, you might get your wish, Muslims might never get on airplanes again!

I don't have a desire to piss Muslims off. I don't even have a desire to keep Muslims off of our planes.
I do have a desire to keep the crazy nother-fucking Islamo-fundamentalist-jihadist-shitforbrain scum off the planes and out of this land.
But nice of you to chirp in.
If one of those machines are installed at my local airport. I think I'd opt for a patdown rather than having to go through one of those things. Never compromise; if you compromise, they're not going to take a little bit of your privacy but all of it.

I hear some people even enjoy the patdown...
Whatever floats your boat
I've never been touched inappropriately when I was being patted down. I can't say for others in different airports but my experience with patdowns thus far have not been bad. It's a lot better than making my naked body visible to TSA employees. A guy or a chick doing the patdown isn't going to grab your crotch or your rear; in comparison to FSBs (full-body scans) violating your privacy by making your body totally visible to TSA employees.

Dude, seriously, what is this intense fear of people seeing you naked?
Would you rather have thousands of people die than for some guard to see you naked?
Pat downs would not be effective against the underwear bomber, unless the person doing the pat down grabbed your junk.
There is no fear but rather a demand that our privacy be respected. I'll bet you a couple dollars that the undie bomber wasn't scanned with this scanner. If the TSA had scanned him with that, they would've found the bomb.

Yes, but an x-ray machine would also scan for plastic guns, knives, etc, etc. Hell, you could get rid of the metal detectors completely, as well as strip searches and pat downs.
It's an all around answer to the problem.
Of course I guess we could buy 6 different machines to have passengers walk through and hire 10 different people for each gate...
That is, if you want to increase government spending and increase the time we wait for a plane even more.
I think the question is, what do people like you have to hide?
