Government data show that since 2000 all of the net gain in the number of working-age (16 to 65) people holding a job has gone to immigrants (legal and illegal). This is remarkable given that native-born Americans accounted for two-thirds of the growth in the total working-age population. Though there has been some recovery from the Great Recession, there were still fewer working-age natives holding a job in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000, while the number of immigrants with a job was 5.7 million above the 2000 level.

All of the net increase in employment went to immigrants in the last 14 years partly because, even before the Great Recession, immigrants were gaining a disproportionate share of jobs relative to their share of population growth. In addition, natives' losses were somewhat greater during the recession and immigrants have recovered more quickly from it. With 58 million working-age natives not working, the Schumer-Rubio bill (S.744) and similar House measures that would substantially increase the number of foreign workers allowed in the country seem out of touch with the realities of the U.S. labor market.

Even criminal illegal aliens are getting the law bent to accommodate them.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) quietly changed regulations to allow more undocumented immigrants to keep their taxpayer status through a program that is rife with fraud and abuse, and to delay deactivation of immigrant taxpayer status until 2016.

The IRS now prevents peoples’ Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from automatically expiring after five years as previously mandated. The ITIN program is primarily used by undocumented workers to follow the law and file income taxes in the United States. Reports came out during the IRS scandal linking ITIN fraud to billions in lost taxpayer dollars. The IRS was forced to reform the ITIN program at the start of 2013 – but this new regulation undoes that reform.


“The IRS will not deactivate an ITIN that has been used on at least one tax return in the past five years,” the IRS said in an explainer of the new policy. “To give all interested parties time to adjust and allow the IRS to reprogram its systems, the IRS will not begin deactivating ITINs until 2016…The new, more uniform policy applies to any ITIN, regardless of when it was issued.”

The solution is simple, yet most likely impossible to accomplish. Repeal the 16th and 17th amendments and return political power to the states. That takes the senators out of the election process, makes them dependent upon state legislatures for their jobs, and removes the cash cow that the federal government has been abusing for decades.

No flat tax, no FAIR tax, and no any other type of broad tax. The federal government can allocate the cost of the federal government to each state in accordance with the population of each state. The states can then determine by what means they will raise that money to turn over to the federal government.

State legislators, not wanting to raise the ire of the voters, will insist that their senators keep the cost of the federal government to a minimum. Conversations around the dinner table will revert back to the lousy job that the governors are doing, and the federal government will fade back into the background, as it concerns itself with foreign policy, national defense, and keeping the states honest.

Report Finds Employment Gains Made in Florida Go to Legal And Illegal Immigrants

A new report from the Center for Immigration Studies finds that the majority of the net increase in employment among Florida’s working age population since the first quarter of 2000 has gone to legal and illegal immigrants. Florida ranked second in the nation in employment growth among 16 to 65 year olds since the first quarter of 2000, CIS says, but still ranks 34th nationwide in labor-force participation of its native-born population in the same age range.

“Employment data for the state do not support the idea that workers are in short supply,” the report states. “In the future Florida’s political leaders should at least consider the employment situation in their state before supporting calls for significantly increasing the number of foreign workers allowed into the country.”

According to CIS, both the total number and share of natives not working has grown significantly in Florida since 2000. But if the employment rate of natives remained where it was in 2000, CIS claims, approximately 768,000 more natives would be working today.
