What’s Obama Hiding In Those Secret ObamaCare Documents?

Obama administration officials have refused to comply with a subpoena for documents that would help explain the failure of 12 out of 23 ObamaCare co-ops. (AP)

Being the “most transparent administration” in history apparently doesn’t mean complying with a congressional subpoena to find out why more than half of the ObamaCare co-ops have failed.

That’s what the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is learning, at least. It has subpoenaed information relating to the 23 nonprofit co-op insurance companies that ObamaCare established with $2.5 billion in government loans.

The co-ops were supposed to provide price competition against commercial insurers, but last year many pushed for and got huge, double-digit rate hikes. Even so, more than half of the 23 set up have failed already, and it’s likely that eight more will collapse this year.

Given that taxpayers are on the hook for billions in loans that might never get repaid, it is only fitting that Congress should find out what went wrong and why.

But instead of providing answers, the Obama administration is stonewalling.

Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said at a hearing this week, “Health and Human Services has not provided any valid legal reason for withholding information from this committee.”

The committee demanded documents back in November that would shed light on how the administration picked these co-ops, how much money has been spent and what plans the administration has to get federal loan money back from failed co-ops.

Chaffetz says that Obama officials merely “assert that if certain information was released publicly, it could cause consumers to think twice before enrolling in co-op insurance plans.”

That makes absolutely no sense. If other co-ops are likely to fail, then consumers should be aware of it, so they can avoid having their coverage disrupted midyear, which could mean changing doctors, paying higher out-of-pocket costs and so on.

This is hardly the first time that the administration has stonewalled congressional inquiries. If anything, it seems to be the unstated policy of the Obama administration.

In addition to the ObamaCare documents, for example, the Oversight Committee is battling to get documents related to the EPA’s massively expensive water regulations, the Department of Homeland Security’s policy on airport credentialing, the massive hack of government employee records and so on.

Obama officials get away with concealing anything and everything that might prove embarrassing or controversial because the “speaking truth to power” mainstream press largely ignores the stonewalling. So the White House doesn’t suffer any consequences or feel any pressure to change.

You can bet the media’s lackadaisical attitude about government transparency will suddenly change if a Republican ends up in the White House next year. But in the meantime, we may never get a clear answer to why the Obama administration flushed $2.5 billion in taxpayer money down the drain.

I'd be suing the head of HHS.

There is no excuse for them not sharing those numbers.

Slowly unfolding before the citizens eyes is the greatest fraud ever pulled by a western government.

And it continues to go on.

Higher prices....
Less choice (no catastrophic plans like before).
Insurance that is too expensive to utilize.

But....more people have it...so it is great.

The big scandal will be when it fails and government still bills people for a service never used. Those idiots signed contracts and more then 40% have never paid a dime. And those contracts all that has to be done is money taken from your IRS refund check OR taken directly from your pay check.

And we are supposed think it is a good thing.

The biggest "problem" for Obamacare is democrats (and their secrecy) when passing the bill. Hell, No one (including democrats) knew a damned thing about what they were foisting upon the American People - and frankly, they didn't care. Once the major healthcare companies began to see the "profit ratio" of these plans, they began bailing as fast as they could. Democrats in Washington, I suppose, figured that these companies would just "absorb" these losses.

Just like Bernie Sanders - democrats just can't get it through their pointed little noggins that America is NOT a socialist country.

I think Socialists.....don't always think it is so great.

Trump will fix it......the medical dysfunctional system is in need of repair and a business man is the only one that can do it. Make America's health care system great again....vote Trump

It was never fixed the first time.

It's a bummer....but you can't spend an average of 8,500 per person per year and expect not to have a screwed up system.

Obamacare was for Mr. Obama just another liberal wishlist item that he could check off. Pelosi and Reid turned it into a kill off the Republican party health care bill and darn near succeeded with the help of speaker Boehner and the rest of the Rino's. The federal government has been trying to destroy the medical system in America for decades so that they could run it and reap the revenue. The nail in the coffin was Obamacare. Now we will begin to hear that the only answer is a single payer government run system like what is being abandoned worldwide. Good luck with that America!

I think the right is prepared for that.

But, in the end......you can't spend what we do and not have something like it.

One of the primary reasons I have always kept my own private insurance for my family (instead of Medicare) at my age is because a large portion of the Doctors in my area don't want anything to do with Medicare - because there are so damned many rules and regulations and, it is like cutting your arm off trying to get reimbursed from the Feds. That's yet more proof that a single payer, government run healthcare system would be catastrophic for the American people.

It's like the old saying - "I'm from the government - and I'm here to help you". You know it's time to run like hell.

Don't you know that Obamamoney grows on the the Obamamoneytree in the White House Secret Garden ?

On the second one....pick it up at 2:55.......it's hysterical. "Do you like Obama's VP pick Paul Ryan....oh yeah, I like him"

But conservatives are the idiots.

As I keep saying, we are only beginning to see the effects of this horrendous law. This is the centerpiece for Obama's "Transformation of America". There is no legislation that is more intrusive and more crippling to a capitalistic system than government-controlled health care.

The problem was never defined....

How would we know if the solution is working ?

It was never fixed the first time.
It wasn't perfect but it worked. Healthcare was at the bottom of the list in 2008 of things the American people felt needed fixing. Now it is totally unworkable and unaffordable unless you're an out of work welfare recipient.

And that was the problem.

It was not on the list.

It's to freaking bad.

I had been saying the GOP needed to wise up ever since Hillarycare.

Once the economy slowed....it surfaced.

Health insurance was broken prior to that.

I had seen it screw many people over for better than a decade.
