The loss of the second amendment would only remove the mandate to protect our rights. It would do nothing to remove the right to keep and bear arms because the amendment does not provide the right, it mearly protects it. The right is given at birth and is, as far as it goes, a universal right, meaning that it extends to all persons until they use it to interfere with the rights of others.
Except it is pointless.......
Technology and the ability to fight asymetric wars has advanced to the point where even with assault weapons the people would be badly overmatched. What do you think the war on terrorists is? The founder fathers were considered terrorists in their day. The risk those same technologies can and has been turned on the people is high. Bush already spied on American citizens without a warrant! Obama is not better in he killed one without a trial!
At this point it is stupid symbolism that does little to actually protect us from tyranny. If people actually cared about the concept they would give on some of the issues around assault weapons in exchange for substantive changes that would in fact make us safer from government tyranny.
