The GOOD Parts of the Omnibus Spending Bill: You Might Be Surprised

Let's put it this way: If the Democrats controlled Congress and the White House, this bill would have looked very different. If Senate Republicans had filibustered, Senate Dems would have invoked reconciliation to end the filibuster and would have passed whatever they wanted. The bill would have included Obamacare subsidies, a cut in DHS funding (especially ICE funding), some kind of amnesty for DACA kids, no money for charter schools, a much smaller increase for defense spending (if not a decrease), etc., etc. And President Hillary Clinton would have gladly signed the bill. So perhaps we should be grateful for what we obtained and work to get more Republicans elected to the Senate.

What difference would it make? We will still end up with the same thing.

They say that in many cases, the only way somebody with addiction problems can get help is to let them hit rock bottom, and then they will realize they have a problem.

Maybe that's what needs to happen to this country. Let it hit rock bottom and perhaps people will wake up.

I hope this is not a duplicate but am going to post this to tee off the Leftists here:

But this gives me a sliver of hope:
Thanks to Bill W. in upstate New York for this heads-up.

Don't Worry about the Omnibus Bill. It appears that President Trump and the MAGA agenda have just won Big Time.
If anyone knows differently let me know, but it's my understanding that:

4) Omnibus bills allocate funds for suggested expenditures, but the President is not bound to follow those recommendations for the use of the funds.

7) Now President Trump has free reign to decide what the funds appropriated in the Omnibus Bill are spent for, and how much of the funds will be spent, . . . or not spent at all

8) You can be certain that funds appropriated for the Liberal Democrat's Dream List will instead now be spent immediately to Build the Wall, fully funded

How much faith do you have in your savior to take funds appropriated for the Liberal Democrat's Dreams and use them on the wall?

Do any of you Trump followers have the balls to put a wager on if he does this or not?

How about a nice friendly wager.

If by Sept 30th Trump has not taken funds appropriated for the Liberal Democrat's Dreams and use them on the wall, you will leave the forum for the remainder of the year.

If he does do this, then I will leave for the remainder of the year.

Any takers?

I am pretty sure than a trifecta of Bush/Obama/Trump is rock bottom...but maybe not, maybe the general populous will prove me wrong yet again in 2020.

Yes, be thankful that this years appropriation legislation only includes a 12% increase from last years.

Fiscal conservatism :2up:

BTW the Democrats control nothing and they were still able to get funding for a tunnel between New York and New Jersey.

Congratulations

The "same thing"? We have 8 years' worth of huge personal income tax cuts, most of which even a Dem-controlled Congress will likely extend. We have dozens of new solid conservative judges on the federal judiciary and a great conservative added to the Supreme Court. Those are long-term positives. We have at least four years of deregulation and overseas-parked American money pouring back into the U.S. And, thanks to Trump's efforts, we are now starting to rebuild our military.

I'll tell you one thing that is turning many centrists and center-rightists against the GOP: the party's refusal to support reasonable, common-sense gun control measures like universal background checks and raising the age for rifle sales to 21. We have much more thorough controls on owning and buying cars, but no one would rationally say that our right to own and use a car has been infringed.

Another thing that is turning off many centrists and center-right folks to the GOP is the party's refusal to make reasonable compromises on immigration reform.

I think Trump was very reasonable on that. Give us our wall, and you can have your DACA people. But as we know, Democrats don't compromise. It's their way or the highway.

Rush Limbaugh said so many times: Liberals measure success by intent. Conservatives measure success by results. Tell me, what good would it do raising the age to purchase rifles? What would that accomplish? Nothing. Not to mention we already have background checks for any weapon purchased from a licensed dealer. The last school shooter was 17 years old; never had a background check. The shooter before him passed his background check and didn't use large capacity magazines.

That's not to say there can't be a compromise. If we can subject constitutional rights to age requirements, I think we can make a deal. Tell Democrats we will put an age restriction on all firearms, and they allow us to raise the voting age to 21 as well. Then we'll see how much Democrats care about "the children."

No, I mean let Democrats run the show. Let's move to socialism. Let's tax the wealthy so they take all their jobs overseas. Let's let government run everything including healthcare. Let's put this country 40 trillion in debt and go into default and bankruptcy. Let's do it all I say.

You might not have been paying attention, but the Repubs are pushing us just as fast towards the left and into deeper debt as the Dems are. From Thursday to Friday we added 63 billion dollars to the debt, that is in on day.

It seems you are right, specifically.

There is money set aside for new projects that New York/New Jersey intends to apply for to build the tunnel. It's not nearly enough though.

Very disappointing. HUD has way too much money as it is. They are putting their lowlifes into great neighborhoods causing their demise. If anything, we should be giving them 22% less instead of more.

The piece @ Congress Agrees to Historic Funding for HUD in Fiscal Year 2018 Omnibus Spending Bill goes on to detail each piece of the item.

For the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the bill provides $52.75 billion in gross discretionary spending and $42.7 billion in net appropriations, according the House Appropriations Committee Transportation-HUD summary. The gross spending level is $4.69 billion (9.8 percent) more than the amount appropriated in FY 2017, $4.71 billion (9.8 percent) more than the House FY 2018 bill, and $2.8 billion (5.6 percent) more than the Senate FY 2018 bill. Given the budget challenges facing nondefense and HUD spending, this represents a historic increase and amount of funding for HUD, and a tremendous achievement for the affordable housing community.

This omnibus spending bill and the funding levels for HUD were made possible by the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which increases the nondefense spending caps for FY 2018.

Now, the question is, along with discussions with the president, how will Secretary Carson actually spend the money.
