If you give people a rise in the standard of living by 36%, then the theshhold level of poverty will be 36% higher, you won't have really lifted anyone out of poverty. The poor in the United States are wildly weathy and have a standard of living approaching 200% of most of the world. Yet look at how poor they are to liberals. Indoor plumbing, air conditioning, their own car, color television, at least one game console. If the poor in the US are really poor, then it is obvious that the notion of poor needs a reality check.

Yep, that's the reason anytime I talk about Americans in "poverty" I put it in quotes because in actuality there is no such thing. I have traveled abroad and seen real poverty and it doesn't exist in this country.

I feel more at home here in Europe because, well, it's home and because of my job I have a very high living standard. But to claim that everything is better here is absurd. Here in Brussels, for example, crime is off the scale and hardly goes punished. Taxation is atrocious. And I could go on. That doesn't mean everything is perfect in the US either. On the whole, however, I still see a lot more Europeans seeking their fortune in the US, rather than the other way around.

The main goal of an economy is to increase living standards, of which the European socialists experiment has done far better then its American counterpart.
European countries spend 6,600 less per capital on health care despite having better health outcomes, 1,600 less on the military, 1,600 less on police/courts/jail despite having less crime 1,800 less on education despite having higher test scores, 3,400 less on transportation, 600 more on electricity due to more efficient appliances/buildings, and 500less on internet/phone services despite having faster service. Europeans also live 3 years longer resulting in 3 years more goods consumed, have 120 more hours of free time yearly, and have cleaner cities/less pollution. Also the bottom 90% of the population get a total of 13 percentage points more of total income. When you add all these things up Europeans living standards are 36% higher then Americans.

Nice list, but as european I smell a bit of BS. For example no way that 3) is true. Health care is not FREE all over europe (even the governmental care costs), and to my knowledge pretty much all European countries have private sector health care alongside public.

I also like how you guys view europe as one big zone under huge government. That's not the case, the countries are very different. The health care systems are different. Some countries spend more, some less. The average government spending is not even that much higher than USA these days. Some countries spend less than USA. But of course we are all "socialists".

The public health care system is pretty terrible. No accountability and pretty much no control for the patient. The level of service has been for me comparable to what you would expect from used cars salesman. It would probably be wiser to compare private HC in europe vs private health care in europe. Because pretty much everyone agrees that private is better. Not a surprise considering you get to choose things if you go private route. Don't like a doctor? Don't go there!

For me personally, the health care system is maybe the worst performing governmental bureaucracy (certainly worst of the big ones). I have got some rad diagnoses before. Dental has of course been even better, after all the waiting times they will put a horribly done black filling on your front teeth without asking anything... Nice. We call health care centers "guessing centers" here, for a good reason.

I personally think that it's better idea to give poor people enough money to afford health care. I have been poor, yet I think it's wiser to not get public care, unless you have some very common problems. Governmental care can not be as efficient as private, because there is just no way to organize it in a way that pleases everyone, also there is no competition which leads to major "attitude" problems and poor service. In fact in a way the worse service the public health sector gives you, the better it is for them.
